What did the engineers say, if anything, about those in the rear seats? Is it really electric release only and no mechanical backup like the front?
I don't know, and the article was copied from the Jalopnik website. If you are so concerned about the rear door release in case of an emergency, then you should contact Ford customer service. Have you tried contacting them? If this a deal-breaker for you, then you should maybe look into another vehicle that meets your requirements.

To meet standards their has to be a mechanical release inside the vehicle for emergencies. Think Tesla doors are electric open and close however, they put a mechanical release mechanism in the vehicles to meet the safety requirements for emergency exits. So their should be a mechanical old style door handle in the cars to open the doors as well. and the frunk and trunk should also have an emergency release handle and a light I do believe are the standards on all vehicles.

Edit: Their has to be a secondary release on all door for emergencies. So their should be a latch similar to the front 2 doors on the rear 2 door as well or the Mach E will not meet the safety requirements or law requirements to sell that vehicle anywhere I would assume.

I did make such contact and they are about as informed as the humorous thread/video posted about contacting dealers.

Perhaps, at some point, someone who knows the facts about the operation of the rear doors will arrive with definitive information so for those who do care, a final decision may be made. The poster right after you apparently finds this hard to believe as well. I am reluctant to give up on a vehicle that seems so excellent in so many ways until this is factually resolved.

As far as the front trunk, I haven't seen a photo or video that shows it in clear enough detail, but there seems to be a button (or similar) towards the front right corner of it, with what looks like a glow in the dark ring around it. So that is likely the emergency release for the frunk.

Interestingly, there isn't any emergency release latch or button to open the hatchback (aka "fifth door") of my Fiesta for a person trapped in the hatchback... but they could fold down the rear seat and exit through the rear doors. The FMVSS require the emergency release for trunks, but not for rear doors: https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/571.401

I couldn't find anything about mechanical/emergency release of the rear doors in the door lock requirements: https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/571.206
