Nearly every day I can read about all of the different EV Batteries and about there range. But you never really hear much about the actual motors! Does each Manufacturer of all of these different EVs Develop and build there own motor? I find it hard to believe that that there are really very many manufacturers of these motors used throughout the industry! As this industry is obviously in a period of growth and supply and demand is an issue, let’s talk a little about the little black box that provides the motion to turn the wheels.

If you dig up the Munro teardown videos on Youtube you’ll get the answer. If memory serves Magna builds the front (non-GT) motor.

And the awesome Weber State video:

Does this Motor Manufacturer produce EV motors for other Automotive Manufacturer? Basically I’m curious if a GM, Ford and a Chrysler really have Electric Motors that are specifically designed and built for there specific EV?

Yes, Magna makes components for a lot of vehicle manufacturers. They make entire cars for Jaguar and Fisker.

The rear motor is made by BorgWarner, and the front motor in the base AWDs is made by Magna. However the front motor in the GT's is the same as the rear motor (BorgWarner).

The F150 Lightning motor is made in-house by Ford at the Van Dyke plant. As far as I know, that's the first EV electric motor Ford's ever made themselves.

Future versions of the Mach-E will likely use an in-house design like the Lightning to reduce costs.

As stated on BorgWarner site quoted earlier, BW makes the case/casting and the gearing for the rear and front GT, others make the motor and the inverter. I think the MME motors are made by LG, and the inverters come from Hitachi. Doesn’t really matter, it’s all typical automotive supply chain. Yes the F150L motors are made in house, the inverters are still built by others.
