I think it will continue the heritage appropriately.
The 60's gave us two new vehicle use types: Muscle Cars and Pony Cars. Generally speaking, Muscle Cars were mid-size cars with full size engines (displacement wise) and full frames.
Pony cars were uni-body construction with sub-frames and mid size engines.
The Muscle Cars were more brutal. Pony cars were more nimble and smaller in size.

In short....the original Mustang fit a niche that did not exist before and has owned it.
The Mach E has that same ability I believe.

Leave this debate for the MCA. We don't need it here.

I honestly have trouble understanding why so many people care about the name. It is a car. It has characteristics. Buy it or don’t buy it based on the degree to which its characteristics match your desires better than other cars. Call it Billy Bob if you want (my 1957 Ford was named Billy Bob--it was a good old boy who often let me down) but the name does not change the characteristics of the vehicle. I have never bought or not bought a car because of its name. I bought the Leaf (stupid name because it sounds like something that fell from a tree?). I bought a Bolt (stupid name because it sounds like something that fell out of something else?). I bought an International Harvester Scout back in the 70s because it could do what everybody I know called it—Haul y’all. The only reason I am buying two Mustang Mach-Es is because their characteristics are a better match to my desires than is any other car currently available. I hope to love it just as I loved my Leaf, Bolt, and most of my other cars but will readily replace it if a car presents in the next five years that better meets my desires at that time. By the way, I only met two people actually named Billy Bob but they both loved it when I told them my car was named Billy Bob.

Not only is the Mach-e a Mustang, the Mach-e is the future of the Mustang line. There comes a time in every Patriarch's life when the time comes to pass the torch. The fact that the Patriarch is alive and well, and arguably in his best form ever, well that does not change the fact the Patriarch can see that his time is drawing to a close. As that time draws near, the best that any of us can hope for is a worthy heir to carry on your name, to know that your line will move forward with honor. I think Lee Iacocca is resting well tonight.

I like your perspective. In this case, the patriarch has far fewer friends (buyers) than in its heyday. To the future!

Someone left a long comment on one of my videos today about this very subject. I haven't responded yet.

Here it is:
IT. DOESN’T. LOOK. LIKE. A. MUSTANG. That’s the whole point. PERIOD. You and everyone who thinks like you evidently have zero respect for the heritage of what a Mustang is. It’s a 2-door sport coup whose exterior design is meant to exude youth, fun, and free-spirited excitement. A high-stance small 4-door SUV does NOT say that at all, no matter how many similar curves Ford gives it, that design is not Mustang.

So in all honesty, Ford just slapped the pony badge and vertical tail lights on it as a cop out and for publicity. That’s it. Don’t kid yourselves. And limping Tesla into the argument is just grasping at straws, just like saying simply being able to say you work on mustangs gives you pride in itself. That’s the same thing a Ford putting the pony badge on a little red wagon. It’s embarrassing and insulting.

Look. I’m all for Ford going the EV route. And this vehicle’s performance numbers are incredibly impressive. The numbers don’t lie. But part of being a Mustang is the look, of which it has none. I’d have been just fine with it simply being called the Mach-E. And I’m sure many other Mustang enthusiasts who are less than thrilled with the name of this vehicle would agree.

At the end of the day, I believe Ford missed the mark, and really lost Focus on their biggest asset, their consumers. It just breaks my heart.

In all seriousness I'm happy that it's a Mustang because the Pony badge is way better looking than the Ford oval. Better than the vast majority of car badges IMO.

Here it is:
The thing is that similar arguments were made about the infamous mustang II (my sister had one) and the anemic 4 cylinder mustangs of the 80's (I had one). He needs to drive one and honestly evaluate it on its own merits.

If porsche can pull off 4 door SUVs, then Ford can pull off a CUV. You need to also remind him that Ford's "loyal base" is a dwindling population. In 10 years the debate will be over as Ford will sell less than 50k ICE coupes and hundreds of thousands of Mustang BEVs, hopefully some of them convertible coupes.

If Ford calls it a Mustang, it's a Mustang.
Oh please no. Can we just not go there? We'll have 745 pages of arguments about the meaning of a trivial, off the cuff remark made by a third-tier executive in August 1965. :p

If Bill Ford says it's a Mustang, it's a Mustang.
Discussion over
Will MCA have a class for the Mache?
Yes. I asked the President of the MCOA. (Unless of course he is impeached and removed over this, but that does not seem to be a very successful tactic these days)

“John,
Thank you very much for reaching out to me. Yes the MACH E is a hard pill for your traditional Mustang enthusiasts to swallow. That said Mustang Club of America has and always will accept any Mustang. The question has been asked if we will judge these cars if they come to our National Shows and the answer is yes we will. The first two model years will be in what is called Presidents Choice which is the class that all new Mustangs go in until they are two years old. Once they pass that point They will be fully judged based on Cleanliness, Condition, and Workmanship. With the current environment we have not had a regular Board of Directors meeting since January. The details of how we incorporate this new Mustang into the MCA family will have to be worked out. I'm sure you have seen the comments that say "I'm done with MCA if they accept the MACH E" Well, that's a very short sided attitude to take and some will but leave but hopefully the MACH E owners will fill the gap. BTW I'm a loyal Mustang II promoter also and own a 1975 Mustang II Ghia. Its. unrestored and a very beautiful car. Myself and numerous Mustang II enthusiasts are finally making head way in shedding the downtrodden image of the forgotten and much maligned Mustang IIs. But we realize some will never accept the IIs and that's their right just as some will never accept the MACH E.

All that said, continue to build the MACH E following. I look forward to seeing some Es in our National Shows next year.
Cordially,
Steve Prewitt”

Great Comments on the MCA acceptance of the Mache. I personally own a 66 Mustang convertible and a future Mache
