It pays for the continual map updates to the geofences which limit where BC can be used.
So if I don't have BC then my Cruise Control will use old maps?

Try and think of a pay per use. Use it a few times per week? That's $5 per use.
LOL based off of how I project my usage of BCHF, that’s >$800 per use. ??

If your BlueCruise Hands-Free account isn’t current, you cannot use BCHF, so no maps at all. Cruise control (as far as we know for now) will continue to work without maps. ?‍♂?

Can Ford, GM and Tesla all just do the right thing and write/update the same national maps database? Seriously, why have every car company mapping roads when we could have 1 central database that we all tap into and update. Someone just needs to step up and do the right thing for everyone. Can I tag Google to tackle this?

That sort of exists, HERE is the major map company most automakers use including Ford, GM, and VW. However their road attributes suck and are often wrong. Google probably has the best map data but the automakers don’t want to pay for it or subscribe to their ecosystem.

Heh, heh, heh. They don't want to pay for a subscription.

Thank you, Ford for making all of our decisions easy!

At $200/year, I'd think about it. At $800/year, I just laugh about it.

There's actually nothing in my life that I spend $75/month on, including phone, streaming services, internet, etc.

As it is now, it takes forever to get updates pushed down. And pay $800/year so I can take my hands off the wheel just to have my car automatically and erroneously go from 30 MPH to 75 MPH in town due to your buggy mapping / sign recognition / whatever? (For $800/year, I do get to use it in town, right?) ?

I like the car a lot, but I have zero faith in any type of value for paid subscriptions. Outside of the hardware required to enable BC, the service itself is worth $0 in ongoing fees.

Tesla uses Google maps. They don’t charge for map updates.

They're still living on the idea that people pay $250+ a year for map updates. Every year. And buy wiper blades and Cabin filters for $200.

I will not subscribe at $800 per year. That is just downright stupid.
I'm also pissed because I shelled out extra cash when i bought the car for the prep package, expecting bluecruise to be a reasonably priced feature. A serious bait and switch...

Ford - "Here, buy this cool hardware and we'll ship out hands-free driving very soon"
Me - "so what's it going to cost when it is released?"
Ford" - you're looking at about $600 for three years"
Me - Great, heres some $$$
Later...
Ford - "JK ITS $800 A YEAR F*** YOU SUCKER. NO TAKE BACKS"

There has to be some point where this goes from a minor pricing change, to an all out con job

Is there an option to stick a bunch of advertisement bars on the screens to pay for this? Seems like that’s coming next. It’s just a matter of time before your car will become a mobile subscription based advertisement machine that wants its share of your screen time while it drives you somewhere.

No.

Job 1 got the best deal.

free for over a year, then it’s $600 for 3
Years.

Everyone else is $800/yr renewal.
But Im not getting the $600 for 3 year option, they gave me the free year which would end in july, but Ford extended to the end of the year, so thats about a year half free. If i renew in Jan when it ends I assume ill have to pay these new rates bot the $600 for 3 years.

The most precise and accurate set of maps (the set most vendors use as their basemap) is available for free from the USGS. The only thing I am certain that's missing is the speed limit information, but OpenStreetMap has that information.

All the data are freely available, someone just needs to develop an app that car manufacturers will use.

I don't know the update frequency of OpenStreetMap. The USGS, because it cares about precision and accuracy more than immediate updates is slow to be updated, so some data (like open/closed roads) would become outdated unless the app supplier could pull in updates from states municipalities.

I’m not sure I understand what you are upset about. We Job 1 21s clearly got the best deal. We’ve now received BC for free, from whenever you got it OTA or installed by dealer, through the end of this year. That’s roughly 18mos free. And then we can renew for 3 years for $600 total. Nobody else is even getting close to this deal.
Are you sure thats the case? It sounds like anyone renewing in 2024 will need to pay the higher price, at least thats how i read it. I feel like they knew what they were doing by extending us till the end of the year and not allowing us to pay the 3yr $600 price now.

Can't speak to Blue Cruise etc. but I can verify what happened to those ridiculously priced map updates for my Ford Edge and F-150. For $150 a year for the updates, each, I declined to participate.

Until Dec. 2021, when this showed up.

So if the MME people do what the F-150 people did, and declined to buy, there is hope that they may eventually "have a sale".:)
