He's asking about the navigation and traffic, which is a different connected service than BC. All owners should be in the same boat on that renewal cost.
Yes, does anyone know how much Navigation / traffic will cost after 3 years ?

I use Nav & traffic daily as opposed to BC which is infrequently used.

Complaining about the BC renewal price when you're years away from renewal is a waste of time. I seriously doubt that will be the price when folks actually have to renew.

If you get behind a good driver that smoothly brakes, then it's not too bad other than the creep behavior right before a complete stop. I wish it would come to a stop faster, rather than creeping at 0.5 MPH to close the gap and then abruptly applying the brakes when the distance is closed.
This is precisely why in traffic I find a big rig and follow behind it. Those blue cruise panic brakes are what get you rear-ended in traffic.

Great explanation here and totally agree. I think people forget that there are many different modals in the vehicle that can have different software versions at different times. This makes everything very complicated when the modules can cascade.
This should be minimized by OTA. They have the ab (allegedly) to update all the cars, they should all be within 1 evolution of each other. There’s no legitimate reason to have so many different iterations of software in the fleet.

Not the case really. Even with OTA there are ALWAYS cases where specific modules have not updated to the latest version for whatever reason. No cellular signal at the time of download, not enough 12v SOC, or other pre conditions that are not met. They all delay the install of software which will cause differences in configurations fleet wide.

So yes, there are legitimate reasons to have so many different iterations of software in a fleet. This is the case for most software worldwide. Which is why we have QA testing as a step in the process.

Software rollouts are much much more complicated than people realize. Even for software on your phone.

I got the letter from Ford (and a note in my Ford online acct) telling me to make a dealer appt. to get (Optional Product Improvement Program 21G01. Blue Cruise) for my 21 Red Pony. Since I use WiFi to get OTA updates at home and I have functional Blue cruise already I wondered if I really need to go in for this. (Maybe I need it for the ability to get the next rollout of Blue cruise?) I called the service dept. at my local dealer and he didn't know the answer although he'd be thrilled if I didn't have to bring the pony in and tie up his tech for a day. He's looking into it and will call me back in a day or so. Does anybody on this thread know the answer?

If you already have functional BlueCruise, you don't need 21G01.

Well said and correct.

This is why so many people complain about OTA updates because of how complex they really are behind the scenes.

Not to mention that Ford's cellular based update servers are client & bandwidth limited; unlike Apple or Android device updates.

As a side note: ALL my Apple devices (iPhones, iPad Pro, Macbook, Macbook Pros, Mac Studio Max, Mac Mini) received in one day: Rapid Security Responses for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Exactly, though even Apples servers are limited in scope. Those rapid response updates are small enough though that the load is much much much less. Let’s them Do a fast rollout.

Large OS releases (like iOS 16 to iOS 17) is still time delayed. Takes usually 4-6 months for 70%+ adoption rate.

There is so much complexity in delivery systems and development that people just don’t understand, but still demand instant results.

Ford is on microsoft's cloud so they could up the coverage if needed. Given they push these out overnight when both cellular and network traffic in general drop off ~95%, that's not really an excuse. They do it in waves to look for issues their private fleet and EA cars don't show. It's quite rare to forklift software in short order -- anyone doing that is just begging for punishment.
