You sounded so sure I went out to have another look.

The magnet says it’s not steel.

The coating depth gauge says it’s non-ferrous, NFe like when testing bonnet & front wings, with around 25 microns of paint.

It feels like aluminium.

It sounds like aluminium.

Could it still be steel?

It IS aluminum.

The difference is it's much thicker and internally braced compared to the lower protection rails.

The aluminum battery case is bolted into the steel frame above it. This is what the steel frame looks like from below with the battery removed:
