"I drive an electric car and fart butterflies" is virtue signaling. "Don't disable a legally required safety feature" is legal advice.
It is not legally required. It is mandated by tyrannical fiat, but I can disable it and not violate the law. Which I have done.

And it does NOT make my car safer. There is no data that says it does. And I know it does not. It is just super annoying. So it is gone. Poof.

And now I can hear the birds chirping, and my tires crackling the leaves in my driveway as I back out. It is so peaceful and wonderful to have a car that is actually silent.

It is legally required to have a pedestrian alert sound, just not that specific sound. I’m not sure how you KNOW it does not make your car safer unless you’ve done a peer reviewed study. You're making up facts just because the sounds annoy you.

It’s great that you’re happy but it’s definitely not safer for those around you.

Show me the data that proves my fake engine sound makes my car safer. To support an obnoxious mandate, you have to have more than just your feeling that it makes it safer.

Also, show me the law that says it is illegal to disable the pedestrian speaker in Virginia. There is no law. But I will wait for you to prove me wrong.

I don’t have to prove you wrong about disabling the sound. I never said that was illegal, just ill advised.

You mentioned a fake engine sound but we are only discussing the backup alert sound.

You can find studies that prove there are increased incidents of pedestrian and bicycle crashes when reversing or parking at slow speeds specifically for quiet hybrids, which would now translate to EVs, by the NHTSA. Although old, they exist and you asked for them. The are also others completed by Universities with similar conclusions.

You fart butterflies? How come my MME didn't make me fart butterflies??

:)
It requires a subscription. $850 a year if you didn't order it from the factory.

There is data and there is also common sense.

But I honestly doubt either will make you change your mind and reinstall it.

Anyone who has ever ridden a motorcycle knows that noise saves lives.

And anyone who’s ever walked in a parking lot has almost been run over by a Prius or a Tesla.

The back up beeping is annoying but effective. People in parking lots look when I back up.

If anything, the pedestrian noise is even too quiet, as I’ve had more than a few people walk in front of me in a parking lot without looking.

In 6 years of driving my v8 Chevy SS? That never happened.

I assumed it was a federal requirement. That said, the onus may well be on the manufacturer and not on the final owner.
Yup. Federal requirement.

From your link:

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued its final ruling in February 2018, and requires the device to emit warning sounds when travelling at speeds less than 18.6 mph (30 km/h) with compliance by September 2020, but 50% of "quiet" vehicles must have the warning sounds by September 2019.[3]

NHTSA also said “no” to letting drivers change the sounds:
https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1136480_nhtsa-says-no-to-ev-driver-selectable-pedestrian-sounds

So yeah, it’s illegal to disable and if you get into an accident because of it? It’ll be an easy case for the opposing lawyers.

uh huh. Thanks for the legal advice, rando anonymous dude on the internet. Yup, no virtue signaling - just free legal advice.

Based on some of the responses, some people didn’t realize it’s illegal.

Based on your response, you don’t care that it’s illegal.

To each their own I guess…..

I do disagree that telling people “not to break the law,” is virtue signaling. It’s just sound advice.

What kills me is the Prius beeps INSIDE THE CAR when you back up.
Interesting. I wonder if too many people got out of the car without realizing it was still in reverse?

Maybe Forscan. No other way. Yes it’s dumb.
Thank you for helping me make some progress here.
#9 found "setting the alarm security level" in manual p.97, and Pre-Collision Assist on/off p.263.

I'm surprised still by the number noise advocates, who feel their own eyes, coordination, and video cameras aren't enough ensure safe driving.

No, it is against NHTSA regulations for a car manufacturer to sell a car with it disabled. NHTSA regulations do not apply to private owners. I can disable it, and it is totally legal.

I am rarely driving around pedestrians. I have sensors and video camera and my own eyes - and they all work. I have never even gotten close to hitting anyone. And nobody has provided any data that indicates my car is more safe making obnoxious sounds. I am still waiting for the data. It is very telling that nobody has provided it yet. Because it does not exist.

And nobody has provided any proof that it is illegal in VA to disable the pedestrian speaker in my car. Because it isn't.
