BlueCruise cancelled itself and cruise control set itself to 100 mph.

Last night I was driving on a fairly empty road (inter city) with two lanes. I was driving in the left lane (faster - USA) and decided to try out the blue-cruise for a minute.

I realized right away that the thing gets very confused when a left turn lane forms to the left of me. It swerves to the left (instead of focusing on the lane marking on the right side as it should know that I’m driving in a two lane road and in the left lane in an ideal world) and then re-centers itself. That’s fine. I could live with that even though it is downright dangerous. I know blue cruise isn’t meant for city roads.

The worst part was not that. I passed a light and at that intersection (light was green), the car disabled blue cruise with a message and I noticed the car accelerating rapidly. Looked at the screen and the speed limit got set to 100 mph. Of course I instantly took control but got pretty worried.

Two questions. Has anyone seen this?

is there a way to use just cruise control in this car without engaging blue cruise? Thank you.

Posted often. You have speed sign recognition turned on in settings, plus you have a factor over that set. I don't remember the limit you can add offhand.

It saw a sign, or a speed in its database, and adjust, as designed.

Turn it off, and this won't happen again.

Literally doing that now. Greatly appreciated!

I like the concept. I ran with it on but recently turned off.

On my regular routes I got used to knowing where the sign recognition got confused or would rapidly accelerate/decelerate so that that I could either cancel before or immediately readjust speed at the wheel.

IMO the acceleration and deceleration needs to be smoother and not so sudden in these cases. And have speed sign recognition ignore the sign for the adjacent toll lane, etc.

The faulty speed sign recognition is a known issue, but this particular instance raises some interesting questions.

Why would the sign recognition ever recognize and set speed to “100”?

Folks on here swear that speed sign recognition uses some mystical combination of optical and mapped speed limit data. Do people still stand by that? If so, does optical recognition of a sign - faulty or not - supersede the mapped data?

The visual recognition overrides mapped data. Mapp data tends to act as a placeholder until a speed limit sign is read. A turn onto a different road will switch it back to map data again. I wish it would pull the metadata that CarPlay provides since it does show speed limit info to the car. It's also way more accurate than the data Ford has.

But Rick is right, the tolerance that was set probably put it to 100. So it may have seen a white sign that looks like "80" and so it set to 100. I have seen it misread a county road sign here in MN as a speed limit sign. Both are white and black with similar text. (It's silly....)

85 is the highest limit in the country so it's within reason.

You had Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) on with Lane Keep Assist (LKA), not BlueCruise. Turn off lane keep assist and leave cruise control on, and you’ll have simple ACC. BC is hands free and doesn’t work on city streets - it’s very obvious when it’s engaged. ACC with LKA will do what you described with turn lanes. It’s why you must keep your hands on the wheel. I have two other cars that do the same thing. Not specific to this model. BC does not do this in my experience on the interstate.

Sigh… except that last year Ford started calling any engagement of ACC/LKA (basically any press of the “magic button” on left of steering wheel) “Bluecruise.” Which is very confusing, I know. So we now we have to specify “Hands On Bluecruise” and “Hands Free Bluecruise.”

So the OP wasn’t wrong to say Bluecruise.

I’m not at my car to check, but isn’t the tolerance capped at 10mph either direction?

That is not accurate. I absolutely had the Blue Cruise on because the car promoted me to keep the hands on the wheels.

I guess if I disengaged Lane Keep Assist, then it’ll be the traditional cruise control that will be enabled (which is also shows as Blue Cruise by the way).

I have not set any tolerances nor warnings for speed limit.

You're actually very incorrect here. "Blue Cruise" is HANDS FREE mode only. You were in lane assist with intelligent cruise control.

There is nothing that shows "Blue Cruise" as just cruise control or even lane assist as "Blue Cruise"

Either case, it's very plausible that the system misread a sign in that area with speed limit sign recognition enabled.

It's clear based on what you've described and your responses to us (Who actually understand how it all functions ) that you may need to learn a bit more about all the features of the vehicle and how they work.

Don't ask for help if you don't want it....

I just explained what I observed. But it’s quite possible that I was wrong about blue cruise vs ACC. Your explanation surely showcases how knowledgeable you are. As I was about to acknowledge that, you went ahead and said the last line you said. I can’t control what you say to others but I can surely tell you that it was uncalled for and I didn’t appreciate it.

Either way, I can’t stoop to your level of condescending tone toward others, so I just want to sincerely thank you for your guidance. I’ll read up a bit more about the features.

Funny, I would reframe from telling other members they are not accurate then... That was disrespectful to them, but I guess accountability only goes one way.
