The higher the system voltage is, the more likely this will happen. It's not a big deal below 600 volts, but when you get over that there are a lot of problems in design. And salt water is one of the worse.

It was saltwater. How doe’s saltwater increase the risk?
Just thinking saltwater is way more corrosive and conductive. Not that it matter but pure H2O does not conduct electricity. Just thinking getting the saltwater into the electrical system may increase the hazard.

It makes water more conductive and will leave a conductive path on a surface when dry. Thereby creating a arc and carbon path. IE; short!

Saltwater isn't exactly good for regular ICE vehicles either. Can still cause electrical shorts and extensive damage to the electrical system in any vehicle.
This is true, but I'm surprised that there were no Kia or Hyundia's. 800-volt systems are a bit scarier.
