Seems with Changan Ford taking over the MME in china is resulting in the qualcomm 8155 sync system showing up in the 24' "ford electric horse" which is the new name of the vehicle. Pure speculation by I'm guessing this is the sync 5 hardware. If so there may be an upgrade path when it releases in the US. The new system runs on android automotive which is entirely different from sync4's blackberry powered lag-fest.
Just a data point.

Please don't get people's hopes up for something extremely unlikely. They aren't going to make Android Auto OS backwards compatible to earlier years.

No, but depending on how many changes there are people might be able to get the new APIM/PDC hardware to upgrade their system like people can get a SYNC 3 APIM to upgrade their SYNC 2 cars.

The connections are the same. With all of the vehicles being brought up to the latest software, it's highly likely a retrofit will be easy.

The thing is, the price. From ford this will not be an easy part to get ahold of for cheap. If its cost isn't $3k I'd be shocked.

Furthermore, ford is encrypting the bus on several components, I believe the APIM along with the IPMA, ABS, PSCM are all going encrypted. They started this with the 23 F250 and the mustang. The hardware is 'married' at the end of the production line where everything syncs up and gets its encryption keys. I suspect FDRS can do this process, but based on what 23 F250 tinkerers have said, it makes otherwise easy module swaps a nightmare.

Again, this isn't to get hopes up, it's to simply bring awareness to what's going on.

NOW, because changon ford has said they will update all previous chinese MMEs to this new system, I'm hoping there's a way for those who want to drop the cash to do so.

I’d prefer NOT to have Chinese “encryption” software on any products I own (and yes, I own a GE dishwasher ?‍?

bruh, it has nothing to do with chinese encryption. This is ford stuff, LOL. Ford makes these products and the software.

Can confirm. My brother has been leading the CAN bus encryption/authentication project at Ford for the past few years. He's very much an American.

Dude, it’s a Chinese state-owned company. You’d be surprised at what the Chinese have done with ordinary consumer devices (two of my former employers basically banned all USB drives (except for a small number of US-made, encrypted ones, provided by the company)). Gee, I wonder why?

Interesting. I would've loved that upgrade for my MFT Fiesta but I don't think the option ever existed from Ford. Maybe third parties had something worked out though.

Definitely a good point. I personally really don’t care if they were to watch me, listen to me or whatever.

I’m sure it’s more concerning if you’re a federal, state or local government employee, but I personally have absolutely nothing that would be of use to the CCP, unless they’re interested in hearing me do terrible karaoke of course hehe.

All companies in china have state stakes in them. That's how they roll. The parts aren't made by them however nor is the encryption that locks it all together. I'm fully aware of the shenanigans they pull along with the rest of manufacturers like google putting microphones in IoT home thermostats.

They banned USB drives because people are morons and will pick up a USB drive they found on the street and plug it in to their work computer to see what was on it. Often times these drives had ransomware or other types of malware and would be used for corporate espionage or other types of ways to get money.

Banning people from being able to plug in random devices they found off the street or brought in from elsewhere is pretty standard corporate cybersecurity and has nothing to do with where the devices were manufactured.

Would love to have the option to upgrade to the newest sync hardware if it providers faster response and access to newer, cooler software features.

Do you have a link for this? I have a 2015 C-Max Energi with Sync 2 (i.e. the year before it supported Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), and would consider updating if it's easy and affordable. Thanks. {Jonathan}
