They're going out today I'm waiting on a quote from Ford, but yesterday the guy at ford helping me said between the electrical, cameras, casing, rear view and new windshield that's probably in the 10k range. The bumper, quarter panels, sensors and labor around probably around 10-12 k and the touchscreen, is 2k plus labor. Plus the keys.

At this point I want them to total it. It was so gross inside. The water damage, plus just the thought of these animals taking a crap in the car makes me never want to drive it again.

Completely with you, I would also not want to see it ever again.

Hoping the insurance is reasonable and just gives you the full amount, they can auction it if they want. After they also spend serious money cleaning it!

I'm not convinced 2 air tags is much better than one. Once the thieves get the "an air tag is following you" notification and find the first one, they will just get another notification within 12/24 hours for the 2nd one. Maybe a 2nd one will buy you some time to track it? I would think if you just hide the 1st one well enough.

I believe there are relay hacks for bluetooth also. There are things called software defined radios that could be used to "amplify/relay" the Bluetooth RF signals between your phone and the car. You can mitigate that by simply disabling the bluetooth on your phone temporarily.

If electronics are your hobby, you are best to go with something like this: Tracker SoM LTE-M for North America. Just wire it into your 12v system and add a local 3.7V battery to it. I did exactly this to have a GPS tracker in my 5th wheel RV. Maybe I should open source the software side of it so others less technically inclined can use it. The beauty of this tracker vs off the shelf units is you can remotely control how often it posts the GPS location. For example, the default could be to have it post once an hour, only when moving. If it gets stolen, you just login to the cloud site that company provides and send the command to have it post the location every 1 or 5 minutes. Another idea would be to have it detect when the 12v was disconnected and immediately start sending GPS out every minute. You could even add a relay to your 12v battery connected to this tracker. When you realize it's stolen, just send the command to disable the relay and the car won't even start or drive.

But I agree that theft prevention is way better than theft recovery.

I was told that the screen replacement would be around $4k (parts and labor). Small screen (like the one in an older Escape) replacement cost is around $1500. I hope your car will be totaled.

DNA can be obtained from feces and cross check with the database of DNA testing service providers to find those animals and the cousins. The second part is tricky. I wish you the best.

Prevention I agree is key and it starts there, with the key storage. It’s a minor inconvenience but one way to help prevent the key FOB frequency stealing problem is to use a ‘faraday cage’ that blocks the transmission.
