Did you think that when you posted an idea on a public forum you wouldn’t get opinions?

Just to pile on…….

What do you think the black market will be for a product everyone here is getting for FREE??

I would also love to hear what your plan is for step 2-

Step 1- track your stolen device

Step 2- ?????
Yeah the step 2 is where I'm trying to figure out what the OP would do once he/she tracks the person. There should be no step 2. If someone steals your free adapter that's worth $200 so what?!? It's $200 and your life is worth more than that.

Right ?

Step 2 - confront the thief, make a citizen's arrest, call the police ?

Confrontation could get you hurt or worse.

Calling the police will get a low priority response for a property crime.

Escalate the situation by proning out the thief at gunpoint, calling 911 and then the cops will show up pretty quickly....

If you are in a CCW friendly state most of the civilians are legally armed.

In any state, you won't go to jail if a private citizen makes an arrest for a misdemeanor.

If you show up at someone's house and stick a gun in their face when they answer the door, I am pretty sure it is they that would be protected if they shot you.

I haven't seen an adapter up close yet, but I'm wondering if there's a 3D printable device that could go around the adapter to prevent the release buttons being pressed without a key or something.

I’ve yet to walk out of sight of my car while DCFC. Mostly because I can hold it long enough to not have to run to the bathroom in the Walmart while I charge, and also because I’m charging at a Walmart. Things might change in the future. But the one time I couldn’t hold it I was in Tucson and the huge wash behind the EA station was dark and no one around. Except for the javelina I scared.

Nothing anyone is going to print (out side of some industrial printer) will stand up to my little Snapon screw driver or LNW prybar.

Nothing will prevent all levels of f*ckery, but at least some deterrance is better than none.

I'll let you test that one.

Pass the popcorn, please?

Police aren't going to care enough about a $200 theft to do anything.
I agree this is true, but any theft, including minor shoplifting, should be taken seriously. It is so sad that personal property rights have been so devalued that a $200 theft is ignored by law enforcement.

I think whether or not it should be ignored by law enforcement should be based on whether or not you can catch the criminal.

Should there be an APB put out for a $200 theft? Probably not, especially if it’s unlikely you would catch the person.

If you actually catch a shoplifter….. yeah, arrest them etc. But how do you catch them? I wouldn’t want the employees putting their safety on the line to try to stop someone. And unless a police officer actually witnesses it……. Same issue with catching the person.

In theory, I think crimes should be punished (like theft), but the world isn’t so practical.

Then there is the philosophical side to it. Some of the same people yelling “thieves should be out in jail……” steal things themselves. Like sharing streaming services passwords (theft) or putting deductions on their taxes that aren’t quite right (theft). Little stuff mostly but then again, so is shoplifting.

To be clear, not condoning any of it. But just pointing out how a “simple argument” actually isn’t so simple.

Just for fun, here is a list of the most commonly broken laws in the country. I’ll just guess that if you’re like most people……. You’ve broken most of them too!

In all fairness, many of those laws should not be laws. But stealing someone else's property should always be illegal, and it should always be legal to protect your own property with whatever force is necessary. It used to be that way.

That’s the philosophical route then. Laws that we think are “dumb” are allowed to be broken?

Again, just showing how it’s not so black and white even though you think it is when it comes to physical theft.

This is mostly just playing devils advocate. It pissed me off when people steal stuff. I’m just not surprised police don’t do much about small theft.
