The speed rating has nothing to do with tread wear, only the tire’s capability to maintain a seal on the rim at high speeds. The wear is influenced heavily by the tread compound. Softer tires wear faster. I had Z speed rated tires on the T/A that didn’t wear nearly as fast as the V rated S-compound tires. ??
UHP summer only tires are prioritize maximum grip or dry or wet surfaces, steering precision is also emphasized.

One thing to consider most people think a All Season tire will perform better on wet but that's not the case. A UHP Summer only has as much advantage in the wet and dry as a winter tire does over an all season in The snow.

Treadwear is a low priority for UHP summer only.

Does anyone know if this is normal? Seems like new factory tires on the GTPE should last longer than 18k miles. Currently have a flat and they are telling me they are too worn to repair. They are definitely worn. Does Ford warranty cover this? I’m in San Diego. Weather typically is nice/mild with a little bit of rain now and then.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks!
I have a ‘21 Select AWD and got 50k miles out of the Michelin Primacy A/S that came on it. They were also great in the NY rain, snow and summer. Put new Primacy’s back on.

I'll let Pirelli explain it.

" Tires with a higher speed rating usually, but not always, handle, corner and stop better, even at lower speeds (although many other factors, like tread, come into play). However, they also tend to wear out more quickly than tires with a lower rating, and they can also make for a stiffer ride. "

I just bought a GTPE and the dealer threw in the GT's all season Continental's to make the deal happen. I'm in the northeast (RI and NYC) and do lots of highway driving. Sounds like it was a good move after reading this thread.

The OEM tires on my GTPE lasted 5400 Miles which was not real good. I now have Toyo Proxies Sports with 10K on them and they look like they should be good for another 5K so That is expectable for the weight of the car and performance. Will most likely go with the Pilot Sports on the next set they now have an Elec rating.

I only made it 11k miles on mine. At 6k the edges were already bald on the front tires. I rotated and did an alignment (but the alignment was fine).

A few things that matter-

I run a little lower tire pressure for comfort at 36 psi, which could wear the edges faster.

I drive 95% city miles. Slow speeds and more turns, more braking and acceleration = much less miles.

The tires on my last car (Chevy SS) only made it 15k. But this for sure is a new low record for street tires.

Heck, I got 9k miles out of my Nitto drag radials on my 2002 Trans Am.

OP, post a PIC of your tires. Are they even on the tread wear markers yet?

Mine before replacing-

“Usually , but not always…” is what they state. It is not the speed rating that decides the wear. It’s the actual tread compound. The construction and material of the bead and sidewall decides the speed rating. The tire companies usually make the higher speed rated tires their higher performing tires, adding treat compounds and patterns that are more aggressive. The softer, more aggressive compound is what’s wearing. All Summer UHP tires have extremely soft tread compounds, making them tires that wear faster than All-Season or Winter tires. This is why most manufacturers offer no tread life warranty on their Summer tires. Sure, a v or Z rated All-Season tire will usually have a lower tread life rating or warranty than an S rated tire, but that’s because those tires are likely aimed at high performance use. The Eagle VR-S tire compared with the Eagle VR tire is a great example. Both V Speed rated, exactly the same carcass. One had a more or less regular tread compound. The other had a very aggressive tread compound aimed at Showroom Stock and auto-X racing. I have had both on the same car and I can tell you that the racing version wears faster than the street version. It’s a coincidence that some higher speed rated tires wear faster than lower speed rated tires. ?‍♂?

The original Pirelli P Zero tires on my GTPE are approaching 25K miles and not worn out yet.

That’s partly because I don’t drive it like a teenager, burning rubber at every intersection!

I’ll need new tires soon, and I’ve been holding out for the new Pirelli P Zero E tire to be offered in the United States. It won’t have the treadwear of an all-season tire but its other features look pretty attractive. So far, it’s only available in Europe.

I'm coming up on 3 years and 40k miles and don't see a need to replace my original tires until end of next summer before it starts raining Oct 2025 around 50k miles.
I don't see what the issue is here.
