Going to a restaurant a few hundred miles away and notice there is a Rivian DC charger nearby. Be nice to charge up while eating. has anyone had luck with this? From what I see online, originally they were Rivian only, but are being opened up. Just wonder if a Mach e'er has tried one. Apparently their J1772 destination chargers will not be opened up

Rivian has announced they will be opening up their network this year but it is not currently open to non Rivian vehicles.

I wish that "opening up" meant "We've added a credit card reader on the front, just swipe your card to start charging".
But, instead, somehow it became ingrained in the industry that a car should be auto-recognized and billing should magically take place in the background using a saved card. So that partnerships and memberships can be taken into account, and only some can be included in "the network".

I charged recently in Inyokern, CA at a Supercharger and noticed the nearby Rivian J1772 stations were marked as “open to all EVs”. Not sure if this is true everywhere.

The question was about DC chargers, not AC chargers, which the last answer talks about but isn't the question.

Fast chargers are the Rivian Adventure Network and are Rivian-only for the time being.

The Rivian Waypoint Network are Level 2 AC chargers and open to everone.

The OP's last line was about Rivian "destination chargers". I understood that to mean a Level 2 AC.

I think, as always, this comes down to cost.

Installing a PoS card terminal to accept your card for each charge station, as well as the connection to authorize the transaction costs more than the simple on/off connection to their network.

I hardly ever see card payment options at charge locations anymore. And I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing "bring your own cord" requirements with the recent rise of cable cutting. Just a J1772 or NACS female port you have to plug in your own cord to use. I know I'd take that route after replacing several cut cords.

Not to mention POS terminals are just another target for vandals, identity thieves (who install bogus card readers), and a general maintenance PITA.

I kind of love the BYO cord idea - especially after dealing with the comically short cords on Superchargers.

It could be chip-card only, no mag stripe reader. Those cannot be faked as easily as skimming the mag stripe.

BYO cord is not a possibility for an L3 solution. Most of those cables are actively cooled, and would have to be rated to safely handle the amount of current the charger puts out. It would also be heavy and huge to lug around.

For L2, you already can buy a J-1772 extension cord. Not sure how many of those stations are having the cables stolen though.

I was thinking of Tesla’s allegedly in the works extension cord. That would be pretty handy, but obviously it would be inconvenient to always have to drag a giant cord out of your vehicle for charging.

Almost Bingo. Upgraded the grading system for chargers.

It would be helpful not avoid using non-standard Tesla terminology.
