Let this be your cautionary tale so that you can learn from my utter stupidity. So you know how key fobs look so much alike. Well in preparation for a trip I stripped my keys down to just the car fob so that I wouldn't be lugging around a heavy set of keys. Fast forward to the last moment of my trip to Texas when we were rushing to turn in our Ford Edge rental car at DFW and I put the key fob in the cup holder. Except that I made the dumbest move ever and put the WRONG KEY FOB in the rental car when I turned it in. I left the key fob for my Mach-E and flew back home with the Ford Edge key fob in my purse.

When I got back to my home airport I realized my mistake when the key fob in my purse didn't start my Mach-E. Well I overnighted the key fob back to Dallas to the rental car company so that worked out. But the douchebag with Hertz Rental Cars must have thrown my Mach-E fob away or not turned it in to lost and found. Thanks a lot!

So I had to buy a replacement fob from the Stealership and they charged me $606.73. You heard me right. $606.73 including sales tax. Thanks Ford for raping us at every opportunity! I know that I made a hugely dumb mistake but it really hurts to get hammered SO HARD for it.

Good reminder for everyone to buy this one for $100 that includes a button for the frunk.

Program it yourself for free if you still have both admin keys. Then stash your original admin keys somewhere safe so you can always program another if you lose the new one.

Switch to this one and enjoy the frunk button.

Did they break down how much was the cost of the key and how much was the programming?

I just had my dealer wipe my programmed keys and program two Lightning keys for me and it was only like $70 for the programming. I've heard of some dealers charging $200+ just for programming one key. So this is at least partially less of a Ford issue and more of a dealer issue.

I would have laughed at them and used PAAK or backup passcode until a reasonably priced fob was found.

Did they actually cut a key? My MME has an uncut blank. If they didn’t actually cut a key, you should bring it back and say it doesn’t fit and you want your money back. :D

I really hope you have an alternative dealer somewhat nearby that you can give your business to - because I would never spend any additional $$ at that one if you can help it.

I drive 40 minutes from my house to a specific dealer (despite having two other 3 other dealers within 30 minutes in different directions) because all of the other ones have just the absolute worst reputations for parts and service - and I'm pretty sure would pull this same shit if given the chance.

Someone has probably already said this but you need two keyfobs to self program.

That takes the cake for me. I replaced a key fob with Volvo this year and they charged me a bit more than half of that - new fob + programming. And that's Canadian dollars.

That's absurd.

Keep in mind the keyfobs are obviously different. Mist vehicles don't have the walk away lock / light up on approach

Agreed - but the point I tried unsuccessfully to make was Volvo - a notoriously expensive premium brand - charged less.

Sure, my 2019 fob is less sophisticated, but it's Scandi...
