Hello,

My MachE 2021 job 1 is in the shop waiting for repairs for HVBJB. I was told by the dealership to bring it in because of the warnings on the dash despite it "working fine" for me because it would degrade further as time went on. I did that and they went ahead and ordered the part for it. I called Ford afterwards and Ford said they would prioritize sending the part out. This was last week Monday, so I have been without the vehicle since and it is my only car. I was told by the dealer that Ford authorized 2 days of rental, which is the amount of time it would take for the repair.

I just called the dealership this morning to get a status update and they said the work was scheduled to start on August 1st and 2nd. So, this is my only car. Does Ford expect me to be without a vehicle for the rest of the time for a FAULT of their own? I tried talking to the CSR on the call and she said something about "if you have trouble paying for a rental outside of this time" we have assistance programsto help with payment.

Is this normal or am I getting screwed over? I would think if your vehicle puts someone out because of your own fault, you should be covering the rental the entire time until it is fixed.

I asked if my Ford Protect which covers rental would work and the dealer said that "it isn't considered warranty work but recall work, so it doesn't apply in this case".

I think your mistake is thinking that these two options are mutually exclusive. I believe that it IS normal... AND that your're being screwed over.

I don't have first hand experience with this, but I believe that some folks have convinced the dealerships to order the parts and schedule the repair _before_ they brought their car in. Then the dealership only had possession for a day or two.

I’ve been in a similar position in the past with a Ford Focus that ended up being in the shop for almost six months. Ford declined to pay for a rental, so I pushed back. They then said they would offer a reimbursement of $35/day. I told them this wasn’t good enough. I ended up going through the service manager who set up a deal with a nearby Enterprise agency that they worked with often. Basically Enterprise deferred payment knowing that the dealership would pay for it at the end. So the dealership paid Enterprise, and Ford paid the dealership.

no idea if this is an angle you can work, but it’s worth a shot.

The car drove fine and I didn't notice any issues with it. I'm thinking I'll just go pick up the car and use it in the meantime. If the car ends up breaking down while I use it, Ford can tow it back on their dime.

Just go back and get your car. Then bring it back when they have their parts in and their act together. Makes no sense for your car to sit at thier lot when you could be using it.
Yup, this is always an option.

For the OP, no, rental cars aren’t a standard part of our warranty or recall. Some dealers offer them though, it’s dealer specific.

I called them and told them I'd be coming to pick it up. I have some mild concerns about continuing to use it, but when I got the warning about powertrain malfunction icon and "stop safely" icon I was over 110 miles from home. I drove it home perfectly fine on the interstate and didn't notice any odd behaviors. The car was charged fine too overnight afterwards. My gut feeling is that something else tripped it, but the recall work still has to get done and will get done.

If memory serves with the specific recall Ford did include the rental. I remember my service advisor had to double check it.

there is no reason for you not to take your car back and drive until your dealership has the parts in hand and has scheduled your HVBJB replacement.

you might want to ask if this is the first one they have done, and go somewhere else if they haven't done it or cannot assure you their tech has been trained to do it and they have the proper battery lift, etc.

my understanding is this isn’t the first one they have done. They just are really backed up with service right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was all people trying to avoid a major Wisconsin dealership by going here instead.

I drove mine for over a month until the part showed up at the dealer. Then dropped it off for the 2 day repair. Got the rental for those 2 days.

Mine had all the prison bars and limited the power to something like a Camry

Did it still “drive like normal” that whole time?

I had my car in for that recall. They found something else that needed to be replaced and had to keep the car for more than two weeks. I had a free rental the whole time. I don't remember the details or how long or what the issue was because my dealer took care of me. Other than being stuck with a Ford Escape and buying gas, no biggie.

Your dealership is the primary issue in your case. Our local dealer isn't perfect but always offers a loaner until the car is finished. During lockdown, they provided a 2018 Ford Expedition that was a trade-in but I had a car to drive. The MME was our only car at the time as well.
