I had just pulled into my garage and hit the pre-programmed garage door button on the visor to close the garage. Still in the driver's seat, with the car turned off, I felt the car jar and heard a crunch sound. OMG! The rear hatch door and (I later found out) the frunk had opened while the garage door was closing. I was able to stop the garage door and close the hatch door but now there is a scratch on my sweet Mach-E's rear door. I don't know how this happened and worry that it could occur again. Anyone else have this occur? Any ideas why?

I wish I knew why. My car is still in the shop (4 weeks) because my liftgate also opened by itself as I was backing out and caused over $5,000 damage. I wish it was only a scratch like yours. Then when the shop was installing the new liftgate, it apparently opened too much and broke the glass top. Obviously the shop is paying for that. Anyway, I read in the Mach E manual that you can adjust how high the liftgate opens which I will do when I get the car back. This has happened to others on this forum as well.

Even though I’ve only had my vehicle since February, I still feel new, and have not experienced a lot of what some of you guys are going through on here. One thing I’m wondering, And when I was looking into getting a third key for my car, and I believe Steve was telling me the frequency of the Key fob. 315 mHz I’m wondering if the garage door signal has something in that range that could be causing this I don’t know it’s just a suggestion because it has to be explained somehow because if I did not get a 315 MHz fob I would not been able to open up my trunk or the front with it and I’m able to.

I have experienced the same thing multiple times, most recently a handful of days ago. I haven't had my hatch open into a closing garage door. Yet.

Fob sitting in the console, not in a pocket. Phone sitting on the wireless charge pad, not in a pocket nor in my hand. Turn off the car, don't touch the screen or any physical controls apart from the door handle, and both the truck and frunk spontaneously open at the same time. It has happened probably a half-dozen times total in mine.

The Mach E seems to just do this sometimes. Here is one thread among multiple: Spontaneous trunk AND frunk opening when parked?

Nobody seems to know exactly why it happens, nor how/whether it can be either avoided or preferably fixed so it doesn't happen again.

Here's one thought-starter on root cause from a longtime recovering engineer, now armchair engineer. I recall from another thread (linked below, writeup courtesy of @markboris ) that the remote release triggers the hatch to open by momentarily shorting a particular BCM wire to ground. I'm not sure about the frunk, but I'll assume for the moment that its release is triggered by a similar method when you use the screen or app to open the frunk instead of the physical double-pull handle.

So... is something just momentarily deenergizing a bunch of BCM wires for a brief moment when the car turns off under very specific and rare conditions? And two of the obvious symptoms are the hatch and frunk popping open?

Here is the writeup by @markboris on hatch operation, in context of adding a physical button for the driver: Adding an inside Liftgate Power Switch

Just got my car back from high voltage recall. Got the car home and shut it off and boom, frunk popped open. Was using PAAK. In my 2+ years of ownership never had this happen before. The hatch did NOT pop open also. Going to wait and see if it happens again....

Hi there, lindseybp! I can look into your Mach-E's frunk concern on my end. To get started, could you please send a private message over with the name/location of your local Ford dealer and your Mach-E's VIN?

It just happened to me to. Wonder if the last update is causing it.

I pulled into my garage and turn off the car. At the same time the frunk and trunk open on its own. The trunk only open about a foot so didn't hit the garage.

At least it happen while I was home and not driving. Or off somewhere and it opens up while in the store.

People need to keep an eye open for this problem. Ford needs to look into it to.

I sure hope you get an OTA update to fix whatever they broke in previous update!

.... this is an unfortunate example of why @Ford Motor Company needs to have a way to UN-install an update, and then provide 'package' updates of ALL modules at known tested/solid release points.

I have turned auto-update off until they get their release management under control and stable

This happened to me last night... trunk opened in my garage without any action on app or fob. Thankfully didn't hit the door, but could have been bad.

This happen to me about 2 weeks ago. Since then it has not happened. Hopefully it was a one time thing. I park in my garage so don't want it to hit the door.

I have a feeling this is related, as someone mentioned their trunk opening when they pressed the garage door button on the sun visor.

I was in the kitchen getting ready to leave and the garage door opened by itself, my car is parked in the driveway. The key/phone was close enough to be picked up by the vehicle from the kitchen.

It just happened again when I walked close enough with the key fob...

Big difference is that I did a ton of updates with FDRS this past weekend.

Are you saying that you suspect your car is opening your garage door on it's own?

The "homelink" garage door opener on the visor of the car isn't attached to anything else in the car. It gets power from the car, but that's it'. No other connection.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. I've never had an issue until today. Only new thing is having done many module updates. I'm not sure else my garage door is opening itself, it's not a WiFi connected system.

I get what you're saying if it just gets power from the vehicle. The reference voltage to the home link system could be affected by updates and possibly triggered by waking the vehicle with PAAK or the key fob.

We'll see what happens over the next few days
