I got my 2021 Job 1 used, and notice that when braking at speeds above 40mph, the steering wheel and basically whole front end of the car shake/vibrates.
I asked the previous owner about it and he said it's been doing that since new and he had dealer check a few times and dealer said it's normal.

In my experience, this is usually caused by warped rotors.

It's gotten so bad, my wife is complaining about it. So I'm thinking about replacing the front rotor/pads.

Has anyone had this done at a dealer? If so, how much did it cost you? Is the MME front brakes any different than a traditional ICE? Can a 3rd party shop do it? Or can I do it myself?

I ask because on my BMW's, you need a special software and ODBC cable to put the car into brake service mode before you can work on the brakes. Not sure if Ford (especially MME) has a special brake service mode that you'll need special software and ODBC to work on brakes.

Thanks!

Your last paragraph applies to the Mach-E also.

2021s have a brake TSB, if yours is still under warranty - https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...rakes-brake-pad-material-stuck-to-rotor.8971/
Ok so you're saying the MME has a special brake service mode that needs to be enabled as well. I guess that limits it to dealer and maybe some limited 3rd party shops that have access to Ford's software.

Mine is long out of warranty (delivered in February 2021, and has almost 43k miles on it) It is under extended Ford warranty but doesn't cover breaks. Original owner tried to get it taken care of while it was under the 1 yr 12k mile but dealer said they didn't find anything wrong.

Now jut curious for those that have had it done at the dealer, how much you've had to pay for new pads and rotors?

I also notice a lot of brown brake dust on the driver side front wheel. The entire wheel is caked with a thick layer of brown brake dust. None of the other 3 wheels have this issue. I use 1PD so didn't expect much brake dust.

All modes use blended braking, i.e. regen and then actual pads at the end. If one wheel has brake dust, that's pointing to an issue as you noted.

I've learned to use 1PD to where it stops the car 70-80% of the time without the need for me to step on the brakes at all. Based on past experience, I expect both front wheels to have similar amounts of brake dust (or rear if the brake system was rear biased). But the front passenger wheel is very clean/shiny, while the front driver side wheel has a thick brown coat of brake dust on it. So I think something is wrong with the driver side brakes (possibly warped rotors causing excessive pad wear).

Is this just for an electronic parking brake or is it more to do with it being an EV?

My wife's Forester has an EPB and you can put it into "service mode" or whatever to get that EPB to back off on the rear so you can replace the pads/rotors - but it's not necessarily a requirement. There's a manual way to wind the piston/EPB back before you compress the piston and swap everything out.

I believe at least 2 people have posted of issues, one got it into service mode and not back out again.

I would be interested to know this as well.

On my older BMW/VW vehicles, the rear electronic parking brake can be retracted using a 12 or 18v battery (like from a power tool) and reverse the polarity.
Newer BMW's require special software to put the entire brake system into service mode.

For the MME, do we just need to use software to retract the parking brake, or do we need to put it into some special Brake service mode?
If it's just to retract parking brake, is that just for the rear, meaning if I'm servicing the front brakes, I won't need it?

Mine has had warped rotors since new as well. Took several trips to the dealership to get them to even consider a new car could have warped rotors. Took the shop manager for a quick drive, slammed on the brakes, and right away he said, "Yep, warped rotors." They turned them, problem went away for a few weeks or maybe a month. Warped again.

I let this problem persist for a very long time and just this week have an appointment to get it worked on again. At 52k miles I am sure I will be out of pocket. But I am worried I will just get a month out of it and find them to be warped again.

I also had them consider the TSB for the bad brake pads, but they said I didn't have the pads that were problematic. Very possible they never even looked at the pads.

Curious to hear if anyone has found a solution to this problem other than getting rotors turned all the time.

Let us know how it goes and how much it cost. I'm thinking about taking it in to have the rotor and pads replaced out of pocket. (out of warranty).

It's now getting worse where if I use one pedal drive and take my foot off the accelerator the steering wheel will shake for a fraction of a second as if the car is applying the brakes for a short period before using the EV motors to regen brake.
