Hi. I just got my 24 MME a week and half ago and just realized the tire pressures are all at 45 but the recommended level is 39. Ok to leave as is? It will be getting cold in Chicago soon and they'll likely lose some air as the temps drop. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You should lower the tire pressure to be 39psi COLD. No, you shouldn't run at 45psi until they lower, they won't lower to 39psi for months.

At least monthly you should check the tires with a reliable gauge (if TPMS is telling you 45 then get a gauge) and set them to 39psi.

btw if you're not sure how to let some air out the tire inflator tool actually has a button on it to do so, to help you adjust while you pump

Really? I'll have to spend some time looking at that. Are you talking about the inflator that comes with the car to fix a flat tire? I figured I would just press the little area of the tire that lets air out and just keep measuring it with a gauge.

yes there is an unmarked button near the power switch, if you press the button it lets air out. so you can easily pump, stop, read the gauge, let air out, adjust etc

Make sure you have the inflator set to air, not using the can of sealer. Several people have made that mistake.

Okay. Hoping this doesn't get overly complicated. When I first got the car I looked at the inflator for 3 seconds and the instructions seem to be completely in Chinese with a few diagrams that my 6-year-old could have made.

Yet, despite diagrams that are quite simple, people have set it on the wrong picture. Of course how many of them read the manual knowing there were 2 settings?

I always igonre the TPMS for upward pressures as. they can read massively over when driving a distance BUT DO take action if they read low, set at normal cold and don’t do anything if they go up or down 2 or 3 PSi provided they are even as they usually are then only adjust using a reliable digital gauge as even my compressor can be a couple of lbs out, I also use TPMS as a guide for inflating up or down according to my gauge, when reducing pressure I just release the connection on the inflator or my gauge to let a little air though you are only talking fractions with my gauge so I’m Happy with say 40.1.
NOW for the contentious bit although it’s normally just me and my misses in the car I have JUST started setting pressures to fall load when cold because all my tyres leave extra tread in the middle section so the higher pressure should reduce the difference, I expected a rougher ride as a penalty but delighted to find that its more comfortable and yes I do rotate and have full alignment checks/adjustments though was not happy with the way the tyre specialist said O/S/R was within tolerance so I am going to get it re done a my local Ford main Dealer expecting FoC as they owe me big time for the last recent four year service missing requested extras should have taken 2 hours but took 3 hours 45 minutes, then car was in again for two days one week later for the HV Contacter Replacement which I had been waiting for as booked in 6 SIX months ago the only extra they carried out was the paint and bodywork check which they missed they also missed it on the first service causing months of arguing to get some warranty work done so yes they must owe.

1. The dealer likely did not overinflated your ties. The plant did. They overinlate them at the plant to make sure that the tires seat on the rim properly. The dealer should have checked the pressure and adjusted it to the manufacturer's recommended 39 psi.
2. If you have a Discount Tire (and some other tire dealers) near you, they will do a free tire pressure check and adjustment.

Chicago here as well and the dealership or manufacture had the tires set to about 45, they did this on our explorer as well. I would adjust to 39PSI, it really made a difference in ride quality over the crappy Chicago roads.

The dealership is paid to prep the vehicle. Tire pressure is on the list. What else didn't they do?

Pressing the valve is the easiest way to do it. Some of the tire gauges have a button that allows you to release pressure while checking your tires pressures. I good quality digital gauge should do the trick. But manual release is easy and no brainer.

BTW> it was explained to me many years ago in one of many car purchases, that a lot of dealers overinflate the tires when pdi to help eliminate the flat spots from long transit time, don't know if bs or not. I always check pressures on a new car anyway
