In college I took an environmental ethics course and we read a book where the author believed that all living creatures (animals, plant, microorganisms etc) were equal in value. So I wrote a paper that using the same logic concluded that the best thing we could do is to kill everything at the top of the food chain (one lion saves hundreds of gazellles) then turn ourselves into food.

The planet could give a a shit about us. If we off ourselves from causing an environmental catastrophe or via some slightly more conventional means like nuclear war, it doesn’t matter. Hell, could be an asteroid strike. Something else will eventually evolve to survive in the resulting ecosphere. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to be less impactful to the environment we currently have that does support our specific type of organic life.

That engine (Lycoming O-360 or IO-360) actually was designed to run on 80/87 octane avgas — which hasn’t been made for decades now.
