My phone looses sound/gps in the apple carplay from time to time, I asked dealer to install the update that supposedly fixes the issue and they said it will cost 300$ to install the updates and it will take 4-5 hours.

I asked about this update a couple of months before and they said it will be free (not mentioning the warranty), but I had 3 year warranty back then, and now they are saying that its not actually free, it was only free because the car was under the warranty.

is it reasonable or it should be free since its a fix for a bug?

Thanks

1. It would only be covered over the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty.
2. It won't fix the problem anyway.
3. You might consider investing in a mongoose cable and power supply for doing FDRS updates yourself.

1. I see, it's a bummer
2. Could you tell me a bit more? You've installed the update, but the connection issues persist? Does this update change anything? Does it make sense to install it at all?
3. By any chance, do you know what power supply I need for that? I'm looking through FDRS topics on the forum, see that one https://www.amazon.com/Clore-Automotive-PL2320-Battery-Maintainer-20/dp/B007ESQW08/?th=1, not sure if it will work. It seems that it's a big update, I'm afraid to break something, to be honest, I don't have any experience doing anything with 12v at all :)

Don't waste your money on a carplay "fix".

Carplay is still wonky. Sometimes static noise, sometimes does not connect wirelessly, sometime drops phones from connection on occasion.

There have been a few "fixes", but it is still "broken"

Mine works well for the most part, but does have the issues mentioned above from time to time.
My other cars are pretty much flawless with wireless carplay. Why Ford has issues with it, I dunno.

A 20amp is not enough for the larger updates on the EV's. 40amp minimum is recommended. The problem with the update(s) that improve phone connectivity is that even with FDRS, you can only update as far was what Ford has released for you. Getting FDRS does not guarantee you can update to the latest version. I am a huge advocate for the DIY route with FDRS, but if your main reason for going down that rabbit hole is to get the latest and greatest APIM update, then it may all be in vain.

I’ve learned to check for Ford Pass updates, usually once I update the app I don’t have connection issues. The app requires your to select the app to see if there is an update required.

CarPlay is a hot pile of potential. Whether in my previous i3 or in the Mach E, it’s just flaky. Give us native Spotify and call it good.

I wouldn't bother - I paid $100 (my extended warranty deductible) to have the TSB "fix" and it made no difference.

Are you using wired or wireless CarPlay? If wired, what kind of cable are you using?

What phone do you have. Pixel phone, from many comments have had problems. Apple IOS 18.4 was a disaster for CarPlay. Lately i have often, like around 1/3 of the time, had to do a ”next track-volume down for 10 seconds reset of the Infotainment screen”. That has worked almost every time. With my iPhone 15 Pro and my wife iPhone 13 mini, i have found that virtually all problems with PAAK and CarPlay are phone related and very often come after iOS upgrades. Use to find similar with Windows after a major upgrade. Programmer often write to the operating system for some advantages and when that system is changed problems occcur. For some reason ny internet signal is weaker in the garage tHan in the past and my updates haven’t been as consistent. I don’t have a clue if it would help or has been a problem. Try running a Speedtest, Also, you can try Ford’s tech line (if they still have it). i think 800-392-3673 877-945-3648

Just yesterday I was thinking that it has been connecting reliably lately with no sound issues for a good while.
Guess what, the next time I started the car, CarPlay connected, but no audio. ??‍♂

I get that often. Started a few months ago. The soft reset of ”next track-volume down 10 seconds“ work almost every time. I have to remember to turn the volume back up because the reset outs the volume at 0. Good luck!

Usually first report of needing the service triggers coverage by warrantees, even if repairs take place later. I don't know how that works for Ford.

It’s a free update. Reference this TSB. It mostly fixed the CarPlay issues. https://www.macheforum.com/site/att...4_general_stability_etc_24-feb-25-pdf.144891/

This used to work, but it stopped working a month or so it stopped, but we found the old way worked 99% of the time.
Old way - Stop the car, shut off, then open and close the door. Start the car again and wait for it to reconnect, then drive off. Sound restored
We bought our 2025 Rally a few weeks ago now, and knock on wood, it's been working except a few delays connecting when first starting the car. We have stopped waiting and just start driving and it has been connecting without sound loss.
