Edit: ChatGPT went out on its own limb here. What it attributed to the Senate isn't actually in the Senate's proposed tax bill. So, I'm deleting it.

ChatGPT's summary of the Senate version (bold text provided by ChatGPT) as it pertains to EVs:

Yes, the Senate tax bill does propose a tax on electric vehicles (EVs). Here's a summary of the relevant provision:
cles or plug-in hybrids

Hah, that's cheap. I live in California. The tags for the Mach E are over $700 for my 4 year old car.

But it's still cheaper than an ICE car. My wife's Navigator, which gets 17mpg, pays about a dollar per gallon in taxes. And that will soon increase by 59 cents per gallon.

I'm tax numb.
We are talking about federal gas tax, which you pay the same rate. Not state gas tax which is a different tax.

But I guess you seem to think it’s fair to pay like you drive 40-50k miles a year just for owning an EV.

Something needs to replace th gasoline tax that won't be collected.
You are missing the point of their diabolical plan.

If they can force their anti-free market - anti-EV agenda, then they will get their way.
This will create an environment where US consumers only have an ICE option for vehicles.
...and the gas tax remains and is is well.

They want to kill the EV industry in favor of their Fossil Fuel overlords.

Meanwhile the rest of the world moves at rapid pace to an EV future.
The US automobile industry will begin to crumble in a decade.

The feds don't pay for roads or road infrastructure at all.
That's absolutely wrong. About 15 of 18 cents goes into the federal highway trust fund.

Why are you guys so worked up about a piddly little $250 annual fee, which is not even in the bill anymore?

I would think the much bigger deal is the end of the $7,500 purchase/lease credit. I'm wondering what Ford and other manufacturers will do to cash in on this as much as they can before year end.

Based on their track record, I expect Tesla will squeeze every last penny out of it this year. But I doubt Ford will be able to get their production/delivery act together in time to capitalize. Probably won't even have a 2026 model year delivering before year end.

Well after reading every page of the Senates version of the Big Beautiful Bill I couldn't help but wonder if I missed the section on the tax. Not wanting to go back over 549 pages I just Googled it .
The tax credit to buy is going away for both new and used purchases but the punitive "gas tax " provision didn't pass mustard in the Senates eyes . The House version still has it and a compromise bill might still include something akin to it but a sigh of relief was let out here . For all the "enthusiasts " who took time to write or harass their representatives . Job well done !

I’m not sure if any senate leader is deserving of a “job well done” accolade.

I just paid a flat $200 Road User Charge for the first time in Pennsylvania assessed on EVs (coming to PHEVs soon). PA has nearly the highest state gas tax in the country. If I had to pay a Federal $250 assessment as well it would be punitive as it would easily exceed both existing gasoline taxes on a per gallon basis.

A fairer way to collect on EVs and PHEVs would be to base the assessment on mileage which PA routinely collects on its mandated annual safety inspection for all vehicles. That is a truer gauge of roadway utilization, IMHO.

Given some of them are lucky to read at a 5th grade level your expecting too much for them to read and understand a Bill.
Reading comprehension isn’t the issue, it’s reading length.

The bill, like many these days, is over 1100 pages.

How long does it take you to read 1100 pages? And consider that it’s not like it’ll be a fun page turner. It reads like a dictionary.

I wish they would pass laws individually based on their own merit instead of stuffing them full of nonsense to get things passed. This has been going on for years no matter who is in charge.

They'll squeeze the money out of us somehow. This is the latest strategy for the Crossroads of America. The problem that I foresee is that the trucks will avoid the interstates and use other roads. They currently avoid the current toll road(I90) and use other local highways. I noticed that some of the GOEVIN chargers have been removed. Makes you wonder where all the money went.

The $7500 was a credit to encourage adoption. It was a handout that we all knew was just an opportunity in time. $250 is a spiteful user fee that is not based on facts, mileage or common sense. That’s the difference.

It’s a lot of additional work to develop and maintain the systems for the marginal benefit of usage discrimination. I haven’t been hit with the new registration fee yet but, in the grand scheme of things, PA’s $200 fee, while slightly annoying, isn’t going to cause me to go hungry or anything. Now, if you want to talk about punitive, try making PA Quarterly estimated income tax payments online. That system alone will show you why you don’t want the commonwealth developing any other complex systems ???

Yeah, I can complain about the Quarterly Estimated Income Tax payments as well. Being retired, the vast majority of my income is state tax excluded as pension income......except for those occasional late December investment profit statements that are taxable. It is unfair that the state expects me to estimate what those will be throughout the year when there is no guarantee they will even appear by year end. I don't call that complex, but call it inane.

See this is what Im talking about . They had the opportunity to test a new system/way to collect road taxes with us. They were too hell bent on revenge to take advantage of the situation .
Im not naive enough to think they won't be back but hope that the tax credit repeal will satisfy them for a little bit until cooler and hopefully smarter heads prevail .
I also don't understand how we're the villains . We are lowering demand which should goose supply which in return saves them money.
I personally haven't purchased any gas in over 4 years .YER WELCOME gasers
