Well after reading every page of the Senates version of the Big Beautiful Bill I couldn't help but wonder if I missed the section on the tax. Not wanting to go back over 549 pages I just Googled it .
The tax credit to buy is going away for both new and used purchases but the punitive "gas tax " provision didn't pass mustard in the Senates eyes . The House version still has it and a compromise bill might still include something akin to it but a sigh of relief was let out here . For all the "enthusiasts " who took time to write or harass their representatives . Job well done !

We should all still contact our house and senate members i have done so once. I have been using the language from www.americanevjobs.com as I feel at least with our republican representatives the position of supporting US jobs goes further

I just want whatever state or federal fees to be calculated the same for every type of vehicle. So if $88/year is agreed, then gas/electric/CNG/hydrogen should all pay $88/year. The wear on the road is the same. (I'm going to ignore pollution for this.)

Yeah I don't understand why they didn't put their greed and need for revenge aside (looking at you Bernie Moreno ) and implement a fair tax .We mostly agree that we should pay our share but the numbers thrown around where/are excessive/punitive in most cases. We could've been the Guinea pigs to let the US transition to a mileage based tax . Implement it on a small group like us to work the bugs out then switch how the US does taxation for roads etc. Since gas tax hasn't gone up in a while they could've increased the amount paid slightly and killed 2 birds with 1 stone .
Imagine how our gas powered brothers and sisters would rejoice when/if gas went down by 19 cents a gallon or the dancing in the streets if it went down by 88 cents in California if they used the new system for state and federal gas tax .
It seems to be a missed opportunity .

Absolutely, and it makes sense now more than ever to revisit a flat rate instead of a gas tax. I have mentioned this in other discussions, but you can't tie road wear to vehicle fuel mileage nearly as easily as you could 20-ish years ago. Between hybrids, turbos, and just the general range of ages of vehicles, fuel mileage can be better in a much heavier vehicle than a lighter one.

When I had a PowerBoost F-150, I was seeing 24-29 MPG in local city driving during the summer. That beats a lot of much smaller, and lighter, midsize SUVs. Even non-hybrid F-150s can see better fuel mileage than something like a Mustang GT500.

Fuel mileage has become a complex beast and pure consumption tax doesn't make a lot of sense if you are saying it's for road maintenance.

Even if they somehow got their way and EVs all but disappeared from the roadways, the issue of significant discrepancy in fuel mileage of most consumer ICE vehicles will continue to be there. The people most hurt by the consumption tax are lower income since they are most likely to be driving older vehicles that are going to have the worst fuel economy.

The feds don't pay for roads or road infrastructure at all. There should no federal tax unless that bill appropriates for that revenue to improve interstate infrastructure.

This whole thing is just political galavanting.

Which is fine, but 99.9% are not buying enough gas to have paid $250 in federal gas tax.

So why should EV owners? Who are also paying tax on their electricity.

I actually really agree. Our infrastructure sucks pretty bad. We do a lot of ad-hoc funding for roads, bridges etc without truly planning or justifying benefit beyond "this is broken, it needs fixed" or, "Costco wants to build here but the road capacity isn't sufficient". I also think the feds should do more on this than they currently do, as states alone can't fund, for example, a decent rail system. A program for interstate transportation could justify moving money into more cost and energy efficient forms.

My electricity comes from the solar panels on my roof.

And therefor you want to pay the equivalent federal gas tax of 1,388 gallons of gas per year?
Hah, that's cheap. I live in California. The tags for the Mach E are over $700 for my 4 year old car.

But it's still cheaper than an ICE car. My wife's Navigator, which gets 17mpg, pays about a dollar per gallon in taxes. And that will soon increase by 59 cents per gallon.

I'm tax numb.
