I have read conflicting information online. Does a tax credit still exist to help offset the cost of installing an EV charger at home?

Just got a quote from an electrician to do it. It was way more than I suspected - 1,800 bucks. It’s a 40 amp juice box charger. Curious if that price is reasonable?

Does that price include the juicebox?

To parrot Phil, it depends on the circuit run. Copper is crazy expensive and your electrician may also have bundled in an inspection fee. You may need to have this done for your insurance to still cover the changes to your house.

I believe the federal tax incentive ended last year for EVSE installation.

The answer to your first question is as stated - the tax credit ended on 12/31/2021. It was 30% of the charger and install.

The second question depends on a lot of things, including the length of the run. Of course the JB40 is around $650 - $750, so an install of $1,150 is actually quite in line to run say 30 or 40 feet from a breaker box out to a garage.

I’m getting mine installed now. It’s $1689 for a max 25ft run including design, permit and inspection. That doesn’t include the nema 14-50 charge point I bought. So it doesn’t sound unreasonable but it depends where you live.

I also might need a load management controller. Due to the 200 amp main panel and all my house circuitry, the LMC might be needed so I don’t burn down my house. That will be an extra $800 if required after they do load calc

Keep in mind that some states have their own credits for chargers and related work. I know Illinois does, for example. Not sure about others.

All of these replies were super helpful. It’s around 20 feet of run, so this price seems to be in the ballpark. Thanks everyone!

The local utility may also give a rebate. Mine gives up to $500 on the EVSE, and $500 toward a permitted outlet or hardwire install. The catch? The rebate is only limited to max 32A chargers and 40A breakers. Lame

Anyway, point is check with state and also your utility company!

The new Inflation Reduction Act changed the expiration date for the tax credit for installing a charger (in section 30C of the tax code) to December 31, 2032. With that change, I believe the credit is even retroactive for installations this year, after the prior provision expired.
