WTF? This is the true Tesla and why I won't buy a car from them:
"It is economically, if not technologically, infeasible to expect that such components can or should be designed to last the vehicle’s entire useful life,” Tesla said in the letter.
Well, if you think of it like tires, I guess that is reasonable.

I guess it's another reason they offer no extended warranty for 3 and Y models.

3 and Y don't use the same old tech found in the S and X. There's a reason why many won't buy an older S, just not worth the risk.

It's too soon to know. Only Tesla has a rough idea what the estimated manufacturing cost would be. Based upon what is known about the 4680 cell, it will be cheaper to manufacturer due to the tabless design so the costs could be a wash. If everything they say about the 4680 cell is true, I would expect Tesla to put in at least a 100 kWh pack in their long range models, which would allow them to market the cars with 400+ miles of range in the 3 and Y.

Many of your tesla owners advise you to sell and move on before the warranty ends. The cost can get high.

UPDATE: Today I took delivery of my new 2021 Model Y Long Range AWD. I brought a long an extensive checklist of items to look out for, especially since I was very weary of the quality concerns. I must have walked around that car 15 times looking at everything, and I didn't find 1 thing that I needed to bring to the sales team attention. This includes the outside and inside. It was raining/snowing outside, so maybe I missed something, so I'll check again when the weather permits. I didn't see any panel gap issues, or anything else misaligned. The only 2 issues I had to ask was about the streaming radio -- Tesla hadn't activated my premium account yet (did it as I left), and my USB drive was not properly formatted (Tesla now gives you a USB drive, which is located in the glove box for Sentry Mode and Dash Cam). Again, I'm going to check everything over when everything is dry. The car drives great and feels comfortable. I'm very happy with the decision. I'd really like to test drive a MME just to see the comparison (@KAustin - talking to you - we can switch cars for a test drive, haha). Here are some tidbits:
- VIN: 108XXX
- 4 Miles at delivery
- IT HAS A HEATED STEERING WHEEL! I wasn't expecting this
- I looked at the 'extras' in the toolbox and entertainment. I'll probably never use 99% of them, especially the farting whoopie cushion -- so stupid
- In Virginia, the front license plate is mandatory, but Tesla didn't install it. They put the plate on the bracket, and left the bracket in the trunk. I'll leave it there for now.
- The car is able to view, read, and send text messages; therefore I could care less that it doesn't have Apple Car Play. Its nav is based on Google Maps, which is fine for me.
- I haven't used a public charger yet, but plugged it into my JuiceBox 40 at home and there's no issue (knock on wood). I'm going to find a public charger and test it out there tomorrow.

I know this is a Mach-E Forum, but just wanted to give an update on my experience. I have no idea were my 'Mach-E' is right now. It's still set for delivery on 20 Feb, so if anyone wants to get to Springfield, VA, there should be a Premium ER Infinite Blue for sale. I'm happy for everyone that is starting to receive their cars. It's been a damn long wait for all of us.

So I was 100% sold on the MME but now that I'm on the cusp of placing an order I feel like I ought to do at least a little more due diligence re the Model Y. There's no question the MME looks nicer, but I don't want to make a bad decision based on looks alone.

Based upon what I can garner, the MME Extended AWD costs $3-5k less than a Tesla Long Range AWD (after adjustments for things like X-plan, tax credit, ford credit incentive, etc.).

Re range, the EPA says Tesla gets around 325 to MME's 270, but it sounds like the MME actually gets pretty close to that number whereas the MY is a bit more inflated.

Re efficiency, the MY gets 100 miles to 27kWh, versus 37kWh for the MME. Again, it's possible the MY's number are a little more inflated but it basically amounts to an electricity savings of around $150 per year with the MY assuming 15,000 miles and 12 cents / kWh. It would take 10 years to recoup half of the MY's price premium.

The MY has the supercharger network - hand's down better - but it still takes 30-45 minutes to get charged back up to 80%? Also, the free charging is only for one year and I don't think that promotion is currently running anyway?

Finally there' the tech, and specifically autonomous driving. This part I can't figure out. It seems like both cars comes with pretty comparable autonomous driving tech out of the box? For TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE, Tesla will give you on-ramp to off-ramp autonomous driving, including lane changes, and the promise of city autonomous driving in the future. Whereas Ford is not making these promises and is way behind Tesla, but I presume will at least be offering on-ramp to off-ramp autonomous driving via an OTA update, and probably for a lot less than 10 Gs.

Seriously: I don't want to sell Tesla short. Am I missing something such that I should consider paying more money for an uglier car? Is the included autonomous driving tech (I think the $10k upgrade is a foolishly speculative waste of money) so superior that I ought to give the MY a look?

Model y, mache, and model 3 we do not know yet so any speculation is 100% wrong. They have not hit the 5 years or 10-year mark. Your statement is 100% not true and just your opinion.
Different tech for the infotainment and batteries/ motors/inverters. Based upon the 3s the have over 300k and 500k miles, along with 100k+ miles, that's not my opinion. It doesn't take a genius to see the difference between the S/X tech vs the 3/Y tech.

Does not matter what tech it is. Anything can break down at any time. He is right we do not know until time has passed. That is with any tech. I guess windows vista is still the best thing ever. That is where your statement is wrong.

So if the S and X have proven economically infeasible to last longer than 5 years, what makes you think it is better in the 3 and Y that are 1/2 the price of the former ones?
