Looking at the location, they came a fair bit off the highway, and had to be going very fast to embed that far. Everyone is going to wonder if they were on Autopilot or not. Since the couple was elderly, I think it's possible she hit the wrong pedal trying to slow down for the exit ramp and accelerated into the semi.

Agree. @ChasingCoral not sure if you are just trolling, but this involved an elderly person that may have made a mistake with gas/brake. Not a good look to post something like this. Sad situation, and something the MME community should not be relishing over. Just a thought.

it's news because only one car company has had a CEO promising robotaxis as "a year away" or less for many years now.

nobody is "relishing this" by pointing out it happened.

and as far as Mark being a troll, anyone who has been on here and paying attention know that is far from the truth, and it's insulting and stupid (yes, stupid) to even suggest otherwise.

Don’t be willfully idiotic. Teslas have a bad habit of doing this. That alone makes it news. If there’s a troll involved in this thread, it’s not @ChasingCoral .

I'll stipulate at this point that we don't know if autopilot was involved or not.

However, here is why it is relevant to mention AP/FSD fails: Musk and Tesla as a company continue to propagate the myth that their cars are anywhere near being able to "drive themselves" anywhere. This lie is going to get more people killed, and the government is quite rightly going to be forced to crack down on ALL autonomous systems in response.

As the phrase goes: "a small minority of @ssholes ruin it for everyone".

Wow, they must have been going pretty fast. Any skid marks? Shouldn't the car have braked even if the gas was being pushed?

you'd hope for emergency braking, but now you are back to "dealing with stopped objects is hard" which has been well-hashed-out on other threads.

Truly sad. It is deserving Of comment simply because it’s electric vehicle and some people are questioning whether it was auto driving or whether the safety features should’ve engaged

No city in America right now has more autonomous self driving vehicles than Phoenix Arizona. We’re kind of ground zero since it’s flat the weather is good it’s clear and our roads are relatively well mapped out. Waymo and all the Others have been out here for almost a decade now. We had the first driverless vehicle running over a homeless bicyclist in the middle the road at night when the attendant driver was watching a video on her phone I believe.
The waymos are especially annoying since they follow the speed limit to a T and that doesn’t work when you’re merging onto the highway in the ramp speed state 15 mph until it’s the highway at 70 mph. Hello Waymo. See that semi merging into your bumper at 80?

I also do get a chuckle out of the Tesla summon parking fails since any pedestrian walking by a Tesla can freeze it and it becomes a beeping squawking dead dog in the middle of the Mortons parking lot.

The point is none of the software sensors or safety features are going to prevent you from dying if you’re not observant of what’s happening around you. 18 wheelers have no forgiveness just watch the old movie of the week DUEL. A classic

Prayers and thoughts to the family and friends of the old people in the very nice tesla who knows what caused it just don’t become part of another accident like that believing your car is going to save you

jes sayin

Since you are so new to the Forum I’ll excuse you for not realizing I’ve been around on this forum since before your Mach E was a glimmer in your eye 😉.

My concern is over inappropriate use of ADAS, and Teslas have had a long affinity for slamming into trailers (as well as emergency vehicles). If you have evidence they were not using an ADAS system, please provide a link here. Just because the drivers were old doesn’t mean there don’t use a car’s ADAS.

I did not realize you were an OG member, sorry.

My concern is all the fake news around EV's in general, and especially ADAS. Not sure if you remember the huge media storm over the Tesla in Texas last year where 2 guys died. The "initial reports" before any investigation were everywhere, about how the 2 guys were in the back seat and the car "drove itself" into a tree and burst into flames. All the reports were "neighbors saw them get in back seat" and "car speed up to 80mph in a few hundred feet, all while on autopilot". Fast forward a year and an in-depth investigation later, and all that media storm was 100% false. They were driving the car (security camera as well as vehicle investigation proved this), the car was NOT on autopilot (won't engage on residential street, NHTSA tested and confirmed as part of the investigation), and the deceased had gotten home from a night out and a few drinks. Most people never hear the follow-up after the investigation. Just the clickbait headlines before any investigation.

It may be Tesla now, but I fear when the MME with Blue cruise hits a tow truck or police car on the side of the road (partly sticking out), it will get the same fake news headlines. If you are on Blue Crusie and a police car is on the shoulder half sticking out into your lane and you don't intervene, wont Blue Cruise crash into the car half in its lane?

/end rant (sorry)
