If you don't mind my asking, how was the insurance payout? As someone who recently bought a new 2023 GTPE, I'd be pretty upset if I had to start hunting for a replacement.

Our 2021 Premium Extended just got hit on a freeway ramp. Nearly the same damage, but not as hard, and bags didn't deploy. Hope the girl with the $2,500 honda civic's insurance totals it. This is too much damage for an EV to be worth saving.

This sucks. It's the second time this car has been hit, and I hope it's totaled, because it has shit for value with two carfax reports now.

It also means my wife lose her carpool lane privilege until we replace it. Last time it was in the body shop it was there for six weeks. This adds about 45 min to her commute each way. Wish we could recoup that from insurance.

also, kinda makes me wonder how insurance companies are going to handle salvage buy-backs. Just think of all the stuff on the car that could be pulled and re-sold for repairs.
Insurance companies would offer them at an auction and various companies like LKQ bid on them. These companies specialize in stripping high value components and selling them to body shops and mechanics. Body-in-whites are then auctioned off to recycling companies for shredding into various metals. A very high percentage of the vehicle’s weight is recycled and reused. It’s actually a lucrative business on the tune of 15-20% profit margin (twice what Ford makes on the new vehicle).

My insurance payout was reasonable. My policy (and sounds like most are) “private party value” which isn’t great when dealerships are the only ones selling a comparable car in the area. So what they did was take a percentage off dealer comps they found to come up with a theoretical private party value. I lost a little $ but happy to have a 2023 with 0 miles and colors I love.

I was worried about that, too, if they decided to repair it. I was told that after my insurance paid out the repair, I could file a claim against the other driver’s insurance (since 100% their fault) for my car’s reduced value after an accident. I have no idea how likely that would have been paid out but sounds like it is an option in MN at least.

My sentiments exactly. Get another one in a better color. Maybe AWD this time.

I have been told this by others who did this. It is (thankfully) apparently a thing now.

"Things" can be replaced ... "people" cannot be replaced. I'm glad to hear everyone was safe.

As for the car calling 911 ... that's been a feature for a LOT of years (my '09 Ford Escape Hybrid had that feature -- not sure how long it has been around). If the car thinks it has been in an accident (e.g. airbags deployed) and there is a phone connected via Bluetooth (or ... in more modern times, Airplay or Android Auto) the car can tell the phone to call 911.

Thank you everyone. Feeling very lucky.

I do plan on getting another GTPE, depending on the settlement. Learning things like “private sale value” vs “replacement value” and the impact on expensive cars that have depreciated rapidly due to current used car market. I also live in MN which is a no fault state. Fun stuff when it was 0% your fault.
Many people are confused by that but MN is no fault for personal injury only. This is so people get medical attention without the hospitals worrying if they would be compensated.

If you called the police their notes decide whose fault the accident is.

Ask your insurance agent if you have questions about this

This hurts my heart - especially as a fellow Space White GTPE owner. Glad everyone's safe!

This is a huge problem with battery powered vehicles with the battery at the bottom of the car when they get in an accident very difficult to repair insurance companies don't want to repair them if the seals get damaged at all I just told them and depending on your insurance coverage you could be out a lot of money especially if you purchase the car out right ever get the actual value of the vehicle back and less you enhance your insurance to include current vehicle value a lot of insurance companies that's an add-on and some states don't even allow it etc. so be careful when you buy an EV I know that if you get an accident probably going to be the last EV you own . Gap insurance may be important if you want a replacement.

Same thing happened to my '89 25th Anniversary LX 5.0 convertible... That car's frame went a lot more "banana shaped" than I'm seeing in your photos. Congrats on surviving your most recent NDE!
