It no longer shows it. Just a yellow exclamation. And when I click on it says something went wrong. Please try again.

He had a prior U3000:49 internal logic fault in his CMR that likely caused the update to fail. Dealer will need to force flash or replace the module.
Is this something that can be covered after warranty expired?

Not sure. The failed module wouldn’t be covered, and would be considered the root cause. But the OTA caused it to stop working. Perhaps some kind of agreement could be reached.
