My new A2Z NACS to J1772 adapter arrived the other day. I’m looking forward to using it to recharge our 2025 Mach Premium on my daughter’s level 2 Tesla charging station at her home in NJ on our next visit. I read carefully through the A2Z operating instructions and it says to first “insert adapter’s J1772 head to your American Standard charging port” then “connect the charging gun to the adapter” Some new terminology there to me. My interpretation is I plug the A2Z adapter into my Mach E port first then connect my daughter’s Tesla connector to the adapter and hopefully there is some handshake and it starts charging. Sounds easy and hopes it works but curious why the connection order is opposite what I’m told should be done when using my Ford supplied level 3 adapter at Tesla superchargers. There I’m told to first put the adapter on the Tesla “gun” before plugging it into my Mach E port. Makes me wonder if the order of connection matters at all on the A2Z adapter. Any insights?

I do the adapter onto the hose and wait 30 seconds. Works perfect.

Hose meaning the Tesla plug cord? That would make more sense to me as well and be consistent with the order for the level 3 Ford adapter and Tesla level 3 stations.

Also using the Tesla level 2 charger. plugging the adapter to the charge cord and then plugging into the charge port.

Adapter goes on cord first. Then the whole setup goes into car.

Removing is the reverse. Pull the whole setup out of the car first, then disconnect the adapter.

That's what Lectron says as well - Adapter to Charger 1st, then to the Vehicle...

Is there a technical reason for the order (safety, communication error etc)?

I'm a stickler for sound engineering reasoning/principles!

My A2Z adaptor also arrived last week and I took it to a local level 2 Tesla charger to test it out; I put the adaptor on the charger and then plugged the whole thing into the car... worked perfectly. When I disconnected I disconnected everything and then separated the adaptor from the charger

I have the Tesla charger with the integrated adapter. For my wife’s Tesla, pull the cord out and plug in. For my Mache E, press the button, pull the cord out of the “charger” so the adapter is on and plug in to Mach E.
functionally, attaching the adapter first

Thanks for the replies. The A2Z instructions that came with my adapter show the opposite procedure as per attached. I will though go with the collective wisdom of this group and and start by connecting the adapter to my daughter’s Tesla plug.

My A2Z adapter instructions say attach to the Tesla cord first and then plug the adapter into the car. I too have the Tesla Universal Connector with its own adapter and it obviously is plugged directly into the car. I say obviously because the Tesla adapter cannot be removed by hand, only left in the EVSE.

Strange the same adapter would have different instructions. Hope I got the right one! Item # 628942279492NACS, Charger To J1772 Vehicle | AC | UL2252/CSA-C22.2 Certified | The Stellar Plug1 Here is what it looks like.

Plugging in is not as critical. Current is not flowing until the car handshakes with the EVSE. More of a habit to get into and consider the adapter + cable as a singular unit.

Removing the adapter from the car first before separating the adapter from the cable is for safety. NACS specifies automatically locking and unlocking the cable to the car. But an adapter only has a manual lock (if any) and therefore theres a chance someone may pull out the NACS cord while it’s actively charging.
