I am working with a dealer to place a mach-e order. I already placed the order through the website, and now they are having me fill out some dealership-specific paperwork. The price generally looks right $56,640 (same as MSRP) except two notable differences:

1. The price sheet lists a $499 "Doc Fee" and $310 "Non Tax Fees." Are these standard for factory orders? Can I try and get these waived? The sales guy I am working with previously said they are doing orders at MSRP.

2. The price sheet also lists a $5,771.04 tax. However, I understand the tax should be based on where the car will be registered, and I live in DC, where the excise sales tax is waived for electric vehicles like this one. Should I worry about getting this taken off now, or should I just wait until I actually have to pay it and mention it then?

Thanks.

I'll let those who ordered share their experience, but when I bought off the lot on Thursday I had doc fee, then DMV fees like tags, registration, etc. as the other "fees" so-to-speak. No matter what, they can't charge you sales tax when there is none in your state of registration. Of course you should tell them and work out everything in advance so you aren't in the uncomfortable position of refusing to take delivery because of things added on at the end.

Given the speed of orders these days, I would say--no need to rush.

The doc fee is a dealer fee. It's total BS. However, nearly all dealers charge it. If you use X-Plan, it's limited to $100.

Sales tax should be charged based on the location that the vehicle is being registered in. That could include state tax, county tax, city tax, and special taxes. For example, I have to pay $100 per year to Michigan because I don't buy gasoline.

There are also fees for titling and registering the vehicle, which may include fees to do an electronic registration, or have a courier take the paperwork to the DMV.

The MSRP should match online.

I would do some research on what the average doc fee is for your area. Since I used X Plan my fees were pretty much set in stone. Using X Plan the doc fee is maxed at $100 (dealership charged me $85).

Non tax fees can mean a lot of things, usually it's title/license fees. You should probably ask your dealer to clarify.

And yes the sales tax is calculated on where the car will be registered. If you're right about DC not having sales tax on EVs, I would fight it and ask them to take it off. Show them the tax code as proof.

1) Doc fee is always dealership driven, mine was $100 and I had a title fee of $19. Your in DC area, I'd call around to other dealerships, they must all be huritng for sales. If you have only placed the order online there is time to switch it to another dealership.

2) tax is specific to your area, Excise sales tax is usually in addition to straight sales tax in my experence (ME, RI, MA, AL), you should maybe check with DMV on that one. In any case if they collect it they can't just keep it. You can also tell them know and that you will pay it when you register it yourself, I have that option in Alabama.
