FWIW, I had been checking for available software updates in the center display every time I drive the car for a while now. This seems to be fruitless. Updates that don't require the car to be offline just install automatically as soon as they are available to the car. And updates that do require the car to be offline show a prompt as soon as the car sees them.

But aren’t those two seconds of searching for updates exciting? Building up and then shattering your hope.?
