I use CarPlay every time I am in my Mach E. I have private relay turned on, and am on iOS 15.4.1. Haven’t had any issues with CarPlay connecting wirelessly except one, and it was easy to solve. Occasionally I connect my iPad Pro to my iPhone 13 Pro via the hotspot while at lunch. If I don’t “forget” that connection before I get in the car, CarPlay will not connect Initially as it should. Eventually it will, but I have to wait several minutes and then tell the car to connect to my phone and then connect CarPlay.
Wireless CarPlay randomly stopped working for me about two months ago. I've tried every suggested fix out there from turning off/on to master resetting the car, twice. I even called both Apple and Ford which was a huge waste of time.

I have iPhone 11 running 15.4.1 with private relay off.

I do sometimes connect my iPad to my iPhone via hotspot like you. So I'm wondering if this is the fix. I made the iPad "forget" the connection but is there another step in the process? Thanks

Make sure to tell your iPad to forget the iPhone hotspot before you get in your car. That’s all I do, and don’t have any problems connecting wireless CarPlay.

I want to revive this thread to second what MachEbh said. I discovered today that my intermittent CarPlay failures are directly related to whether my iPad is hotspotted to my phone. Or my son’s iPod. Turn off personal hotspot and CarPlay will connect just fine. So this may be a solution for some of the intermittent failures.

I have had this happen a few times. Rebooting Sync fixes it 90% of the time and when it does not work I reboot the phone and then it always works.

To reboot Sync on our cars: Press and hold the volume down button and the forward track button at the same time for about 10 seconds and the center screen re-boots within 30 seconds. It can be done while driving. It only impacts the center stack screen, not the speedometer or any driving functions.

My wife and I both have frequent issues with the Mach-E connecting to CarPlay, hers fails more often than mine. I will try the Sync reboot next time and see if that helps. Funny though, my 2017 F150 does not support wireless CarPlay, only wired, so I bought an $80 device on Amazon that you attach to the USB to add Wireless Carplay. It has never failed to connect a single time and from starting the truck to wireless connection takes about 15-20 seconds.
