I've not seen a single Android user complain about this issue, and I have personally seen it across dozens of iPhones and vehicles of different makes.

Just saying ?‍♂
Shhh, they're still trying to figure out how to unlock their phones

But the problem goes away if you place the phone on the dash behind the screen, I've tested this multiple times. So it's clearly some sort of GPS interference, which I'm not sure how it would be fixed on Apple's side.
I’ve also put it in the sunglasses holder and it hasnt screwed up there either.

This began with the latest IOS. My 12 pro went to shit 2 days before I traded it in for my 15pro max which is doing the same thing.
I had my 15promax fork me over many a time whilst I put 1700 miles on a POS Altima rental last week. Even walking around Boston and Parts of Vermont it just quit and took a smoke break.
\Sometimes it'd tell me to get off at an exit number, but it'd show the wrong exit on the map. So as I exit, it then shows I needed to drive PAST this exit and another 1/4 mile up the road and gett off at that exit. I ran the 93/95 clover leaf enough times to nearly have it memorized because it'd do this.
It's not the car it's the phone. It even screws up while walking. (My wifes 15 plus and my kids 14 did it as well, though the plus was a little better) at one point I was running all 3 phones to the same location and watching them all do something different.

The 15 Pro Max is the first iPhone I genuinely dislike. Much of what you’re talking about I’ve experienced as well. If I could go back to my 12 ProMax I would.

Something changed for the good overnight. When I started the car this morning, it didn’t go right to CarPlay. It asked me to select a phone, and when I did, it asked me to authorize something like “projection services” or similar, a message I don’t recall ever seeing before. From that point on, I could once again keep my phone in my pants pocket and the gps tracked perfectly, just like the old days.

I am not aware of an overnight update to either the vehicle or the phone. I’m not declaring victory just yet, as I’ve been burned before, but I’m hopeful.

I've had this issue ever since I got my Mach-E. Both with an iPhone 13 Pro and still (but less often) with an iPhone 15 Pro. Putting it in the cupholder and giving the phone a clear view of the sky seems to fix it.

Never had any CarPlay issues in my old Genesis but that was wired. I feel inclined to blame the car since its obnoxious faraday cage attributes make it almost impossible to activate my garage's RFID pass. I imagine GPS signals are having the same issue.

As has been discussed earlier in this thread and elsewhere, the CarPlay spec calls for the use of the car‘s gps antenna and receiver when available. Something is causing it to decide, wrongly, that there is no built-in gps, and therefore using the phone’s system, which can be highly dependent on its position in the vehicle.

Some of us, like you, have had the problem all along. Others, like me, were fine for years, and then weren’t. In my case, this got fixed yesterday. Maybe something changed in the phone, or the car, or in outer space.(in the form of a stronger transmitter in the nearby satellites). I wish I knew.

The rfid card or device would likely need to be in the black dotted area around the rearview mirror on the windshield to have a chance at working.

It’s unfortunately the hang tag style so can’t stay up there permanently. Even still putting it up to the black dots I’d say it only works 60-70% of the time. Usually just end up sticking my hand out the window.
