I have reserved a MachE rental from Budget for next week in Austin, TX. Having been a MachE owner for over 3-1/2 years, I obviously know how to use the car. My question has to do with charging a rental. Here is what I think will happen, but if anyone has any better advice, it would be appreciated.
  • I should be able to charge the rental at any CCS charger where I have an account. In particular, since I have a ChargePoint card, that should be no different than charging my own car.
  • I should be able to start a charging session from the FordPass app for any charger in the Ford network.
  • I would not expect the rental to have Plug and Charge set up.
  • I am thinking about taking my Tesla adapter, just in case. I should be able to start a charge either through the Tesla app or the FordPass app. It seems like this should work just as it does for my car.
I really don't expect this to be an issue since there are plenty of chargers in and around Austin. And I don't expect to do a lot of driving, although we might take a trip to San Antonio to eat on the River Walk. This post is intended to find out if there might be any problems I am not aware of. Thanks to all!

I wonder if they will try to pre-sell you a full tank of gas for $80 .

Seriously, when my Lightning was in the shop they provided a Mach-E but they treated it like a rental. They recorded out and in "fuel" readings.

I had a Mach E rental recently and the nav did not have access to chargers, seemed to not have any connected services. You will have to rely on your apps to find chargers.

I rent mache and lightning when traveling. No issue charging anywhere include Tesla. Which app depends upon which works at that moment.

Depends on how far you are driving each day. I was in Houston last year for 5 weeks. I rented a Mach E and used a 120v Level 1 charger most of the time. I bought a Lectron Level 1 just for this purpose.

Just dropped a gas car at Avis, guy in front of me was getting a lecture for returning an electric not charged and they were telling him he was going to pay a lot extra for doing so ?‍♂. Would be interested to hear your follow up to your questions above after the rental, did your account work or did you have to pay a premium and it use the rental company account etc.

In my experience, you can use any account to activate a charger, and then plug in any compatible vehicle.

The electric cars I have returned to budget were not checked for SOC. When I asked they said they weren’t too concerned, and that it can be tough to find a charger. Might be a local management policy. Btw, I have requested the MME several times from Budget and so far have gotten a Hyundai.

So then you couldn't charge at Tesla's SC network eh?

I have paid no attention when returning EV to Avis. While I don’t return it empty, it often depends on how far away I am from the airport.

No, you cannot charge any Hyundai at Tesla Superchargers except Magic Dock locations.

They will certainly try to sell you a full charge though. Have fun w/ the L1/L2 supply equipment as well.
