Damn, that sucks. Never had that problem with GEICO. I think in CA comprehensive claims aren’t allowed to raise your rates, but I’m not certain of that. I filed two comprehensive claims for body work and I’ll let you know if they cause my rates to go up… (We’ve filed lots of claims and so far the rates haven’t gone up.)This isn't necessarily true. I've only had two claims in the last 7 years. One was approx $35-40 for a glass chip repair on my Fiesta, and the other was windshield replacement on the Mach-E in 2022, which was around $1,200 through Safelite but fully covered through my $0 full glass comprehensive policy rider. Both claims were with policies held with prior insurers.
Progressive, my current insurer, notified me that my premium is not as low as would otherwise be due to their assessment of my risk profile during underwriting reviews. After much back and forth to get to their detailed reasoning, I eventually got this response:
The reason you were not offer the lowest premium is due to the two comprehensive claims found on your record. These claims has been taken into consideration since your policy was purchased back on 08/14/2024.
...
Our historical information suggests that policyholders with numerous not-at-fault accidents and comprehensive coverage claims greater than $1,000 have a higher likelihood of future claims.
These claims may not always point to the driving behavior of a driver, but may reveal a higher likelihood of claims based on a policyholder’s driving environment (e.g., roads with high traffic density, traffic congestion/stop-and-go traffic on routes taken by policyholder, vehicles parked at locations susceptible to theft, vandalism, or exposure to severe weather).
We list comprehensive claims that have happened within the last 83 months. Points are only charged for the first 35 months.
