Yes, that makes sense. I’m a Bay Area ex-pat and made that drive from Foster City to Glendale for years to visit my Mom. I had forgotten about those climbs. You can do something about your speed though.

Heh, back in the ‘90s I used to do Foster City to Glendora quite a bit. Early morning runs in the street Celica usually netted <4 hour drives. I don’t do that crap any more. ??

Now having said that I realize that I have a Mach-E and not a chevy Bolt anymore so I am also part of the problem.

Well, if that’s the point of CAFE, they certainly didn’t know it when it started in the early 70s.

And when the unrealistic standards came out in 2007 for 2025, I don’t think that was the point then either.

But to the point I’m making now-

The ideas of this thread that “of course future technology will hit these unrealistic goals…….” Isn’t a new idea.

I think people are too optimistic about future technology. Just like they were with the 2025 CAFE standard (which originally were 54.5 MPG.

In 2007, the government thought we could hit that by 2025. They were wrong………way wrong.

Another similar ridiculous standard is the 2030 deadline on the west coast for “all electric new car sales.” Just ridiculous. Zero chance we can ramp up supply chains and infrastructure by then.

A few things to consider -
the CAFE 54.5MPG goal would be reachable if everybody drove a Prius instead of a Silverado on our commutes. It's not even technically very challenging... it's just socially untenable. The approach Europe uses is sky high fuel taxes... it could happen here.

the west coast 2030 deadline will likely work because lots of places (i.e. most places between California and NY) will not go along. The cars sold in EV only places will be different than those sold elsewhere without too much imagination or stress on supply chain.

Being old(er) and working in health care, forcing all into Prius height vehicles isn't going to work. Sky high fuel prices? How about sky high electro prices? Or better yet, states that produce those electro atoms for California charge that state sky high prices for their needs? As they say in Middle America. What goes around, comes around.

Holy crap! A 6 1/2 hour drive in less than 4 hours? That's an average of almost 97 mph! Glad you're still alive!

Just saying the dinosaurs lasted a few hundred million years, man, we will be lucky to make it to 2100.

I think that standard is attainable but people need to get off their butt and make a change. Does everyone need an SUV or a truck? I am sure 90% of cars in use could be replaced with a used Toyota prius. Americans need to loose weight, buy less crap, and not be so concerned with image. If we all shifted our mindsets to that of 3rd world countries we could make these standards in no time.

We don't even have to go to that much of an extreme. Just cutting out all the subsidies for fossil fuels and all the derivatives would be a start. And changing our commute vehicles from massive 4-door pickup trucks with 8-foot beds when we're just sitting in an office all day to smaller vehicles or even (gasp!) public transportation would be another start. But...yeah, good luck...

Heh, I made it there much faster in the ‘79 T/A. The Celica was a beast and the T/A is… A ‘70s Trans-Am Category 1 race car with a much bigger engine and license plates. Both cars included gas stops. But, like I said, I don’t do that stuff any more. ??

Forcing everyone into a Prius? I am guessing you have never sat in a Prius. Passenger space is similar to the MME.

Yeah we had one too... traded it for the MME. My BMW 5 series was faster and quieter but the Prius was better in most other ways. The hate for these is similar to the hate for EVs... mostly coming from ignorance.

Naah. The hate that most of my friends and I have isn’t because of the Prius itself. Most Prius drivers around here drive like morons (and now I am giving a bad name to morons through association with these poor drivers). ??
