Searched the forum and found nothing recent and definitive. Do Mach-Es still use the worthless 2-piece 'capped' lugnuts? If so, anyone have a good lead on quality lugnuts; preferably chrome?

Yes they are still 2-piece capped lug nuts. Your search didn't come up because all the threads here use the proper two words for lug nuts, not one. In some of those threads, this single piece lug nut seems to be a popular one:

And about the 2-piece capped lug nuts, I have used them for many years especially on my 2007 F150 that had close to 300K miles on it. Never had issues but then I never used an air impact wrench which does kill them after time.

Discount Tire needed to replace four swollen lug nuts on my 2018 Escape last year at about 60,000 miles. My sister had hers replaced two years ago on a 2012 Ford Fusion; once again too swollen to get the lug wrench on them. Maybe you are having better luck with corrosion in California than those of us in the Midwest do.

I swapped out the nuts on my lightning for some higher quality 1 piece ones but they required a 22mm socket instead of 21mm / 13/16. Have been meaning to swap the ones on our Mach Es but we have aftermarket wheels for our snow tires that already require a thinwall socket with the stock nuts. Can anyone recommend a good quality lug nut, ideally black, that uses the same size socket as stock?

I actually think the use of 21mm impact sockets instead of 13/16 is an additional cause of some of the trouble with the stock lug nuts. Yes, they corrode and swell but they round off too and the rounding seems to distort them in a way that makes the swelling more problematic. I have not had any problem YET with rounding on the stock nuts with my electric impact and a 13/16 socket but I did have plenty when I was just grabbing the 21 from my metric impact set.

I impact them off using the electric tool's "auto" setting and then impact them back on using a 100ft/lb limiter, followed by hand tightening with a torque wrench.

In states with freezing temps, moisture freezes under the caps and deforms them. Either way it still requires prodigious use of impact guns. It's crappy but several makes (including Toyota) have used them.

That's always one of the first things I replace on all my Ford vehicles....why they keep using that garbage is beyond me...(yes, I know, they are cheap $)

CJ Pony Parts has a great lug nut selection.

My lug nuts are still in pristine shape you’d think I’ve never changed tires. The problem is how tire shops use their impact wrenches. They are too sloppy to fully seat the tool before hitting the trigger. I use an impact wrench but do it a bit slower. Never had an issue with two Mach-Es.

Oh, and I live in a humid area with plenty of freeze / thaw cycles.

Oh, I do agree with you and I think they are crappy also. I don't use them either. I change all mine out but in the early years I didn't and never had issues as long as I didn't use an air wrench.
