My mme is at the tire shop and the guy asked if I was aware of ford lug nuts swelling in the heat. After about 30 minutes of googling and checking the forum I still dont know if the Mach e has them. Could someone please enlighten me? Thanks so much in advance.

Not new news. Google "Ford swollen lug nuts". Make sure you don't miss the word "lug".

so I looked it up, a lawsuit filed back in the 2010s, I can't imagine that's still an issue, the guy probably wanted to sell you some new "non swelling" ones.

It was still an issue at least through 2017 model year. I’ve fought those too many times.

Thanks much for the responses. I know the lawsuit was around 2017 and dismissed around 2019. I saw a few things that indicated they continued to use them, but could find nothing on whether the MachE has them or not.

America’s/Discount Tire is now trying to sell me replacement solid lug nuts because the MME DOES have the 2a-piece type. Sheesh…

I guess it doesn't take much for people to hire an ambulance chaser anymore.

These things have been around since at least the 1980s and probably aren't going to go away anytime soon. They're not exclusive to Ford either.

In general - 2 piece lug nuts are basically a stamped stainless steel "wrapping" over a higher carbon steel nut. If moisture gets under the wrapped shell, then rust can start which swells the wrapped shell. The swelling will change the size of the nut and can even split the sides of the sheet metal wrapping. Northern states that use salt on the roads can make this much worse. Anti corrosion coatings on the high carbon nuts underneath the wrap help, but can only slow down the process.

If the nuts appear to be swelling, they yes change them. The strength is usually not compromised on the high carbon nut at the thread, but getting a socket on them will become difficult and possibly prevent removal at the 150 lb-ft installation torque level.

Also people with high power air tools getting medieval on these lug nuts will distort them.

^^^^ this. Be careful removing and installing wheels and the lug nuts would last longer. Of course, I use my own impact wrench at the lowest setting with torque limiting rods and ensure that the socket is perfectly / fully seated before going medieval. Seems to work even in harsh Midwestern winters.
