Does anyone plan to use AM radio in their Mach-E?

Just curious. Such a pain to implement in electric vehicles.
Nope, I never use it. Heck I never use FM either, just SiriusXM or my iPhone.

The only time I use FM is to check to see if my Christmas light show music is properly broadcasting. Sirius is something that I never use.

I listen to talk radio on AM. The AM radio radio in the Mach-E has very poor sensitivity and is prone to interference. Probably because of the tiny antenna. Still in strong signal areas its not bad. When I go out of range I switch to an app but the content is not always 100% the same.

The primary problem with am radio is the electric car. I recall several articles back when @RonTCat first posted this question about the difficulty with ev’s and am radio. Several manufacturers were planning on abandoning am altogether. I suspect that absent Congress requiring am radio on new cars none would come with it. Manufacturers know what we use and am is on the losing end for most.

Personally, I’ve never even set am radio on the Mach-e or even on the Tacoma which is about to turn 19. I haven’t listened to am radio since the heyday of KGO-810 in the SFO Bay Area and we left there over 20 years ago.

It's FM that I have no presets for. I have 2 AM presets (for talk & live sports). My other 18 presets are all SXM. That's what I listen to 95% of the time.

I never have any problem with EV interference with the AM signal. At least not around the city. Range may be shorter though.

(Now waiting for the first yahoo to come in and say "Why are people posting in a 3 year old thread?!?)

Conspiracy to get Ron to comment on it? ?

Come to think of it Tim, I’m not sure there’s a single am station outside of Oahu. Half of the state’s population lives there so that would make sense. I do listen to FM when I’m outside cell range here (middle of the island mostly), but otherwise I’m streaming podcasts, music and the like through CarPlay. That includes some of the local FM stations as well as NPR too. I think streaming is where the death of am and fm broadcast will come from eventually.

Norway turned off FM nationwide starting in 2017 and finishing in 2022. It was replaced by DAB+.

Streaming alone wouldn't cut it for me. We do too many road trips through long stretches of no cell service.

If I was in the real United States I’d have an SXM subscription as well.

It is due to the fact the electric drive is essentially an AM radio station broadcasting across the entire AM band. The shielding for the radio system is substantial, and even then the interference is still quite powerful. The few really high power AM stations should be able to be reached, but farther away or low power stations will be hard to tune or very static-filled. I'm sure for a few million dollars you could get a system put in that has good AM reception.
