My wife got into an unfortunate fight with a pole and it damaged our door a bit. We don't want to go through insurance since we have a high deductible and happy to pay cash.

We got a quote from a body shop who said it will be ~$1k to repair the door or ~$2k to replace it. I'm not sure if its worth the extra thousand but haven't decided what to do. I'm doing Ford Options but pretty sure I'm going to buy the car out next year (barring anything crazy) but would still like to have the chance to have a high resale value after if needed so glad to pay extra money now if it might help later

Without a picture, no one can really give their opinion. The body shop should also be able to give you an indication if they're confident on being able to make it look as good as new. I wonder if it isn't too bad and you can just use a paintless dent removal guy? Probably save you a bunch of money.

If the body shop can make it look as good as new, I wouldn't spend the extra $1k. Definitely confirm they don't report to CarFax, that'll be a ding on there regardless if it is a repair or replace.

They claim it will be just as good and they have good reviews but I've never used them before.

Is it weird to ask them if they report to carfax? Don't want to come off as sketchy

You’re going to have to replace that door if you want a quality repair. Otherwise you’re going to have a fair bit of body filler to try and get the door right (it will fail in time). Ask me how I know (my wife hit the garage with 70 miles on the clock). My shop quote was 3k and that’s what insurance is for and they paid it. You’ll have to paint almost the whole side of the car to do it right.

yowza, I'd get a new door. It is definitely NOT sketchy. Very common, a lot of people, for obvious reasons, don't want to take their car to a place that reports to CarFax. Heck, just call in from a different number to their receptionist and ask if they report to CarFax, then they won't even know it was you who asked.

I asked my body shop when they did an insurance repair, they said they do NOT and most repair places don't anymore, but insurance does.
