EA stops charging MME, tells me to "move" after 10 minutes -- every time

Ok, I'm starting to get a complex here, so wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience. Otherwise, I guess my MME and EA just aren't "meant to be" and really can't stand each other's company. Here's the situation:

  • There's only one EA DC charging bank near me, so of course it's the only one I've used--why drive "far" to get a charge? Silly.
  • I'm trying to use up my free kWh.
  • Set up FordPass and "plug-and-charge." Happy to say both work swimmingly.
  • Unfortunately, the EA chargers do not. They rarely work on the first try and sometimes require different chargers or plugging in again to work.
  • There's usually no one here--it's like a graveyard.
So...after the handshake goes through and I start to "settle in" for what I think will be 20-40 minutes, it will abruptly stop charging around 10 minutes (sometimes sooner) and say "grace period will end in 10 minutes. Please move so other customers can charge." But no one is here!

I called FordPass, which sent me to "marketing" which was so busy they sent me back to FordPass. After 20 more minutes (more time than I can get this to charge), I finally got through to "marketing." We started talking about it and the rep indicated they had never heard of the issue. I asked point blank "does the free charging only work for 10 minutes?"--which he said emphatically no. He then started some investigating, but for whatever reason he could not hear me anymore (I could hear him and there was nothing wrong with my phone). So...he hung up.

Being unwilling to invest another hour of my day into this, thought I would hear if anyone has had this issue, what they did (if anything), and maybe offer tips about what I can do. Otherwise, could be a bug with the car or EA or both and I'll have to tell my dealer about it as maybe there is an update.

@OutofSpecKyle was among the first to bring these issues to light in his road trip videos early this year. To what extent this is an issue with certain EA chargers or certain MMEs is not immediately clear, but initiating a charge session via the EA app rather than Plug&Charge is currently recognized as the most reliable (albeit not free) method. I would also recommend ending charge sessions with the button by the charge port on your MME rather than on the charger side as a safeguard against some phantom errors. Best of luck.

You can always turn off plug and charge and still active the EA charger through FordPass which will use that complimentary KWh. This will help you eliminate a variable. I read that most of plug and charge issues have been resolved, though, so I would consider your experience out of norm.

Most reports indicate that calling EA for support is much more productive than calling Ford. There have also been reports that one brand of EA charger does not work well with the MME, though that may only be related to kWh. I don't recall.

EA chargers always give a 10 minute grace period and then will start charging a per minute penalty fee. The issue is that it is disconnecting for some reason. I suggest unplugging when you get the message and try again. Then you can see if it is consistent.
