EV Fire Blanket

Does anyone know of any documented MME fires? All I've ever seen reported around here are Teslas, and it's still pretty rare. I don't know what the data is compared to ICE, as far as a comparable average. I'm guessing it's lower for EV's, but I don't know....

EVs are much less likely to catch fire than ICE vehicles. I mean, technically, every ICE car catches fire just to function, but unintentional fires outside of the engine are also way more common than an EV catching fire.

I checked with the committee, as I was not involved with the final negotiations.

#1 Our insurance company required them. No blankets, no insurance. This a Ruling factor
# Getting the required unit owners approval was difficult, and without the blankets we were needing votes. These votes likely were those who were on the fence, not anti-EVers.
#3 Those trained in the building, will only be allowed to put blankets on a car that is smoking, nothing approaching car involved in flames
#4 Fire marshal is not a fan of blankets. The next guy in line is, and has been to training for the use of blankets in those cases where they can be effective.
#We understand that Europe is more pro-blanket than authorities in the US

So far as we know, there have been no EV fires in the entire Puget Sound region in an underground garage.

Sounds a good measure and the only option for your situation notwithstanding professional and non-professional opinion for/against blankets.

Application of blanket, if possible, would suppress flames so reducing spread of fire in that confined space which appears to be the intention of the rule.

Suppose its a case of horses for courses.

For what it's worth, the insurance coverage on our new MME is $500 cheaper annually than the 3 year old Honda Pilot it replaced, for the same coverage. ? That was a nice surprise!

Does the concept of a fire blanket for a lithium ion battery even make sense? The purpose of smothering a fire is to reduce available oxygen. Since lithium ion batteries self oxidize, I’m not sure it would make a difference.

It's more about containing the fire and protecting the surroundings. The battery will continue to burn under the blanket.

On that note "God for bid" if it ever caught fire....where does the fault lie? Insurance wise. Do Ford or any other EV Manufacture take responsibility. As these batteries should be fail safe.

And no ICE car ever caught fire in a garage, right?

Here’s the only option that makes any sense: hang the blanket from the ceiling with the rope affixed to a cleat next to the car. If the fire is significant, the rope will burn and drop the blanket.

When the fire inspector asks, tell him Rube Goldberg designed it.
