Ford Mustang Mach-E First major repair IMG_5421

After thousands of miles, Mach e wouldn’t charge at any Level 2. DCFC was totally fine. Service found open circuit in the SOBDM and needs to be replaced. Total cost $4137.64

they also did the HVJB recall and the front door sealant issues.

The bright side of things was I got to drive GT as a loaner and absolutely loved it. That loaner made me such a bad driver, weaving in and out of traffic. Several times, some left lane huggers wanted to cut off my opening to overtake them, always left them in my trail of electrons; something I knew I would never be able to do in my premium.

Seriously considering to upgrade to a GT or Rally especially all these computer modules may start breaking down after all these miles…

I have two MME. MY WIFE HAS A 2021 AWD premium. Only problem was replacing the 12 volt battery. The cost was $250 for the battery and $45 for installation. She has 105.000 miles and going strong. The only other problem
Is that I have a 2023 GT and I get WAY MORE updates than she does. I LIVE my GT. It is a much different driving experience. I love the 2021 because it is getting close to being paid off and no issues. We use it for in town and mine for out of town. I plan on replacing hers with a 2025 or 26 because it will have the Tesla port built in so no adapter needed and supposedly the range will be somewhere between 350 and 400 for the GT. With mine I plan to see how high I can go before major repairs. I am hoping for 250,000 miles. So far it is one year old and 50,000 miles. Zero issues except for the 8 inch speaker on the dash that needs to be replaced.

4 grand...ouch. I'm not sure I've ever had such an expensive repair in many years of driving out-of-warranty German cars. I hope you're able to at least get a business expense deduction out of it!

Dealer tech and Mach E owner here, I just replaced an SOBDM under warranty for a customer, an AWD select. I have replaced a handful in the past few years for the same issue, red CSI ring anytime a level 2 is plugged in. I attached some images I took during the repair, the SOBDM is the largest module in the pictures, and is bolted to the top of the front subframe underneath all the other modules. Warranty time was 4 hours. I hope your Mach E is trouble free from here on out! After a few drives it may be worthwhile to open the trunk and pop off the upper trim, and make sure both of the coolant bottles are at the proper level. I lost a lot of coolant doing that repair, and not every tech I have met knows that you need to run a program in the scantool to open the valves and run the pumps to bleed the cooling system completely after a repair.

WOW, that is a significant chunk of the whole assy, and looks like a bit of a bitch to get to!

What would be your best guess as to CAUSE of SOBDM failure ?

I'm wondering what part inside SOBDM is failing that would result in red ring of death on the L2 charger. I'm also wondering if the owners that had the failures used Ford Mobile chargers exclusively, or if they used other EVSEs at higher charge current very often , or not.

heat hot spot from ....? failure in cooling system pump/valve?

All but one of the SOBDM I have replaced set an internal fault DTC, and SSM 51137 directs me to replace the module with no further diagnosis. SSM just notes an 'internal concern'. My guess would be a failed circuit board component or a short circuit like
OP stated. A year or so ago I unbolted the top cover on a failed unit out of curiosity but didn't see anything that indicated a failure. Further disassembly looked difficult and a bit spooky so I just bolted it back together :) I have yet to see any failures on modern cooling system pumps or valves. The only electric pump I have ever replaced was on my old 2005 escape hybrid.

That repair price is hard to swallow. KBB trade in value estimate is $13K. The repair is almost 1/3 of the car's trade in value.

My car's front camera just broke at 47K miles. Not even gonna bother to repair it. I bet the bill will be around $1K or more. Just gonna trade it in around 100K miles if it can hold till then without major problem. Not gonna get another Ford.
