After building hype for several years, Fisker says it’s nearly ready to bring its Ocean SUV to market. At the Los Angeles motor show, the automaker unveiled a production-intent variant of the all-electric vehicle and said it planned to begin pilot production this week at a Magna-Steyr facility in Austria. According to Fisker, full-scale manufacturing will start a year from now, with deliveries following shortly thereafter.

I like the feature of the glass retracting and all windows coming down with a push of a button, sounds like a targa top. Wouldn’t mind seeing that on the Mach-E. That and the solar cells that let you (slowly) charge the car with sunlight.

this is not EXACTLY the same but in the FordPass app there is an "all windows down" option which I used in the summer... and if you use a fob, Fords for a very long time have supported "press and hold the unlock button to roll all the windows down" which I have used to great effect in the past. it goes back to at least 2011 on the Fusion and probably longer back than that.

I bet the range estimates are WLTP, which mean practically nothing. Until they provide battery capacity, I remain skeptical. Meanwhile, my MME GT is awesome.

I bought my Fisker stock at $12. The key is selling when it is at the top of the hype before other investors realize the whole company is a sham. I highly doubt they will be able to deliver a massed produced vehicle. Although, I worked for Magna for 5 years (bought that stock at $17 while working for them) and they are very capable of building complete vehicles. I have been to the plant in Graz many times when they were making E-Class and X3s.

everything Fisker says means practically nothing if history is any indication, although I have seen one real life Fisker Karma charging at an airport parking lot a couple of years ago and thought "huh, there's like 1/3 of the working units right there".

In like 2011 or 2012, there was a minute when I was seeing Fisker Karmas pretty regularly. Of course, it could have just been the same guy I was seeing every day. Pretty soon after that, the Model S came out and the rest is history.

Curious, what makes you think Fisker is a sham? By outsourcing the production to an experienced contract builder (Magna), they would seem to have a better chance of getting a vehicle to market than most startups, no?

You didn't ask me but I'll admit that my pessimism/skepticism is completely driven by history and it might not be fair to the current incarnation of the company.

but I am not putting down money on a reservation any time soon, either ;)

I will admit that I came *very* close to putting in a reservation for the Fisker Ocean today, until I realized how little storage space it has in the trunk and there is no frunk. I would really love one of these vehicles, but I definitely can't go any smaller than the Mach-E.

Henrik is a very talented designer, as was another guy named John DeLorean. I would put them n the same class when it comes to raising money to start a car company. And a short look back to 2012-2013 with Fisker Automotive reminds us how hard it is to start up a truly “long term” viable automobile company in today’s lean, logistics heavy, competitive car market. Supply chain and infrastructure is what will kill any new guy trying to enter the car market today. Having an end vehicle manufacturer means nothing if you can’t supply them with the parts to make your cars. The assembly lines don’t stop for anyone. So if your parts aren’t there “just-in-time”, your screwed. And lack of scale creates a price competitive purchasing nightmare. Every part on a car is a make/buy decision. All of the OEMs have the ability to make component parts and assemble. I’ll give a real life example: are you more competitive building a house when you can do some of the work yourself or relying on another GC’s subs to do all of the work? The same is true in vehicle manufacturing. So the trick is having enough money to build cars (at much lower or no margin) until you can hire enough of your own employees to build them at higher margin and create a sustainable business model. Also remember the BIG guys are also buying up capacity at the same lower cost suppliers with a lot more leverage.

So maybe “sham” is the wrong term. Because Tesla will show us that entering the car market as an OEM is possible, even though they still struggle with quality, but I would ask who else has been able to break into the market successfully over the last 30 years. None. In 2018, Car and Driver gave Fisker a 2.9/10 chance of success. Maybe that has improved over the last 3 years, but not by much.

Just my opinion.

Like I said, I bought stock, just need to sell at the right time because it will not be a long term hold like my Ford, Magna and Tesla (which has shocked everyone).
