I have my MME order in (placed in August). Last weekend I took an ID4 for a test drive and placed an order (I don't plan to buy it, but why not just in case the MME doesn't work out).

If you think MMEs are backed up, my AWD ID4 delivery date is May 2022.

I wanted to write up some differences between Ford MME ordering and VW ID4 ordering.

Better on the VW/ID4 side:
  • I can manage my reservation (even after it's submitted) on their website by myself. No dealer help required. I can change my exterior and interior color, my trim level, AWD/RWD, and any packages. This is a huge deal. I suspect the configuration probably gets locked when it's scheduled for manufacturing, but that has to happen with any manufacturer.
  • Your order is placed with VW and managed by VW (not the dealer)
  • The orders are managed at the VW level (not dealer). None of this nonsense about per-dealer allocation and your order may not go in for months.
  • Orders are generally a first in first out queue (FIFO for my fellow computer science nerds). And if someone cancels your can be moved up (I believe this is across dealerships at least regionally, maybe nationally). Again, this is at the VW level. They do batch certain configurations.
  • I can cancel at any time and get my money back. Again, this is at the VW level. It does not depend on the dealer policy or whim of the dealership which on the Ford side could range from your deposit can be refunded at any time to your deposit can be refunded until manufacturing is scheduled to your money will be refunded when the car is sold by the dealer to your order isn't refundable at all.
  • The deposit is $100 for a reservation and $400 additional when it goes to a full order. Period. It doesn't depend on the dealer.
  • No dealer markup.
Worse on the VW ordering side:
  • The ordering website had me enter my zip code about 5 times.

Better on the Ford ordering side:
  • It only asked me for my zip code and selected dealer once. That's about it. Everything else about Fords ordering process is pretty terrible.

I did the same. My ID.4 (Pro S AWD Statement) has an estimated delivery date of October or November 2021. My MME order was accepted by the dealer on 8/27. I ordered the ID.4 on the same date. I got the order locked email soon after. My MME order is for Iconic Silver, so I'm guessing the ID.4 will be here sooner.
