I have been reading articles about solid state battery research. Is this just a pipe dream or is this where battery technology heading?

Will happen. The question is the timeline and the current technology is always improving.

Id' give it a good 5-8 years before it becomes viable. Even if it goes there, there will be issues in the beginning stages.

Successful mass production techniques haven't been discovered for solid state batteries, at least for the batteries that are actually better than the "wet" Li-ion ones we have now. The sum total of legitimately good solid state batteries that has been produced to date is somewhere around enough to power an iphone. Not all iphones, one iphone.

Even for the lesser solid state battery efforts to date, you are talking a lifespan of a 100 recharges, not 1000s. New battery every year. Invest in landfills.

Current news reports state that Toyota, Samsung and Nio are coming out with solid state batteries in vehicles this year or next. A former Tesla employee who helped develop the original Tesla Roadsters battery pack states in a white paper in his new battery company that the challenges of a solid state battery make the development of a solid state battery impossible in the near term. So, which is it?

I believe that solid state battery production is getting very close to being a reality. Here's a recent article about Quantumscape, a solid state battery company: Tesla co-founder on QuantumScape's new battery: it's a breakthrough (electrek.co)

Other car companies have numerous patents on solid state battery technology. Toyota is supposed to have a car with a solid state battery later this year. It's a prototype and not a production car but still portends a great future for solid state batteries. Toyota’s 2021 Solid State Battery: What You Need To Know (insideevs.com)

Nio recently announced that it was producing a solid state battery for its ET7 sedan with a 1000 km range for sale in the 4th quarter of 2022.

All of these announcements and more seem to indicate that solid state batteries will be here soon and that they will be in cars capable of fast charging with 1000 km or so in 5 minutes in the near future. My guess would be that we will see them and they will provide enough charging cycles to rival the current lithium-ion batteries.

Nio's car will get delayed multiple time upto maybe 2025
