Hey everyone,

Can someone help me understand how to program the garage door opener from a keyfob? I live in Vancouver in a condo, and my fob has a button to press to open the garage. I tried to program it the way the manual suggests, but failed. Has anyone managed to do it?

I didn't know the Ford MME fob had a garage door selection. If it's not a Ford fob, I would contact the person that gave it to you. If it's not a Ford fob, your car wouldn't have anything to do with it. You need to link it to your garage door, not your MME.

There would be no difference in whether your existing garage door opener is a standard opener or a small fob. However, it must be Homelink compatible. Research that. If it isn't it won't work. Adding a MyQ would make it compatible. https://www.chamberlain.com/about-chamberlain/homelink

When I tried to program my GDO the instructions said to do it three times. That did not work. Finally I ran across a video that said to try it as many times as it takes. I ended up going through the connect sequence five time before it worked. It has worked fine ever since.

Ah, perfect, thank you both. What did you connect sequence look like, @JJR ? Like what buttons did you press for what amount of time?

Have you programmed your visor to your opener? Usually you have to press the learn button on the opener and then your visor button within 30 seconds.

This is from the Owner's Manual. I had to do Step 3 five times.
1. Press the learn button on the garage
door opener motor, you have 30
seconds to complete the next two
steps.
2. Return to your vehicle.
3. Press and hold one of the three
HomeLink function buttons you want
to program for two seconds, then
release. Repeat this step. Depending
on your brand of garage door opener,
you may need to repeat this sequence
a third time.

I had problems programming my garage door opener. It turns out that there was swtich inside the garage door opener head (in the garage) that had to be triggered to allow it to receive the signal from the car. The location of the switch varies from unit to unit. Mine required opening the unit to locate the switch near the light bulb. Here is the procedure I used (thanks to someone on these forums who posted this, but I forget who -- sorry )

Step A: First Train the button in the car

1) For first time training, press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons, releasing only when the HomeLink indicator light begins to flash, which may take up to 20 seconds. (Do not perform this step when training the additional HomeLink buttons.)
2) Position the hand-held transmitter 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink surface (usually located on your visor, overhead console, or mirror), keeping the HomeLink indicator light in view.
3) Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold both the desired HomeLink button and hand held transmitter button. DO NOT release until the HomeLink indicator light flashes slowly and then rapidly. When the indicator light flashes rapidly, both buttons may be released. (The rapid flashing indicates successful training.)

Step B: Then train the garage door opener to the newly trained button:

4) A second person may make the following steps quicker and easier. Please use a ladder or other device. Do not stand on your vehicle to perform the next steps. On the garage door motorhead, press and release the learn code button - the red LED will begin to blink.
5) Get back into your vehicle and press the desired HomeLink button one time.
6) Press the desired HomeLink button a second time.
7) Press the HomeLink button a third time. You should see the garage door open/close. HomeLink programming is complete.

The original Ford instructions are written as an either Step A / or Step B proposition. I had to do both.

I don't think I even know what a learn button is or where it's located. I'm living in a condo complex, not a house. I mean, obviously I can see the garage opener from inside the garage.

Then you probably won’t be able to program it unless you get assistance from management.

Thank you! I guess the first step tells the car which code to send, and the second tells the garage door opener that it's authorized?

I'm just confused because I've had my garage fob copied without having to press any learning buttons before.

I am clearly not an expert on such things, but I get the impression that the garage door opener unit needs to be enabled to receive a signal from a different device (your car). I'm unclear about your situation. I presume you have access to the garage door opener unit. Or are you parking in a common garage with other condo residents? If you have your own stand-alone condo garage, you probably can go online to find out where the "learning" button is for your opener, then activate it so HomeLink will work from the car. But if you are sharing a garage, you probably need to contact managment as suggested above.

I'll try that!

To program any opener you NEED physical access to the actual opener itself, and that makes sense when you think about it. If you could just do it from the remote a thief could just get your remote and clone it.
