That would work for some things, but not full house...

Exactly! That's our backup plan rather than a portable generator.

Looking at all the contortions in this thread... LOL.

Plenty of tutorials out there - build a homemade Powerwall, or go buy an original series Land Rover.

If they came up with some way to limit their liability to battery warranty I could see it. IE: X kwh drawn from the charger port counts as Y miles against the battery warranty.

My goal would be in emergency situation (heating the house in winter, or water heater). An inverter would be more than enough for my specific situation, but i'm wondering how strong is the DC/DC converter in the car 1kw? 2kw? ?

That's an important question that I haven't seen an answer to. My system using a 1kW inverter for the Leaf's 12v battery works because the Leaf recharges the 12v at up to 1kW.

the 2016 model S is rated at 2.5kw, it does seem like a nice number to have some flexibility (and be sure the battery would not get depleted)

The easiest way to do this for now is just a power inverter off your Mach E's 12 volt battery -- assuming you can find it! Here's a video that I followed to set up home power backup from my Leaf.

Update on this: it look like the DC-DC converter may recharge the 12v battery at 1.9 kW. I'm not sure if that can be continuous but at least it means my current 1 kW inverter I bought to use on the Leaf should be fine.

I like the idea, but seems like it would need to be supported by the vehicle to not void the warranty on the battery. Do they have a list of vehicles it's compatible with?
This device is CHAdeMO (scroll down on the linked page), which supports vehicle-to-grid (V2G) in the standard and touts it in their marketing, although not every vehicle supports that capability. There are multiple V2G devices that work with, for example, the Nissan Leaf, and Nissan supports that use.

This is all irrelevant to Mach-E owners and to the world at large since CHAdeMO is dead standard walking and the Mach-E is CCS.

CCS is working on vehicle-to-whatever but it's slow going.
