What if you live on top of a hill?
Charge to 90% or 95% if you don't need all the range that day. It's what I do. Otherwise, if you charge to 100%, be prepared to have to use the friction brakes more so than usual. Probably will only last 200K miles instead of 205K miles...

Latest: This morning went out to the car. SOC = 100%. Car tells me another software update had occurred. No info on what it was, however. I back out of garage, put in in D and press the "L" button. Regen occurs as expected when I lift off the accelerator. Back to normal.

This is not what happened yesterday, when I started this thread. So, either
1) the update on 6/5 broke regen and the second update on 6/6 fixed it
2) Something happened in my car that was unique and it had nothing to do with the software updates and magically fixed itself
3) I've been drinking too much good wine

All my charge settings and phone-as-key settings were wiped out by these updates, although the car retained my user profiles and radio presets which is nice. I also note I can no longer use voice commands to make a call with Car Play connected. This is not all that important to me but I noticed it.

In any case, "L" mode works again and that's all I care about for the purposes of this discussion. Thanks for your attention.

the "headroom" in the battery is on the bottom end, not the top. think of it as a reserve.
Battery capacity is battery capacity. It does not know top from bottom. If the battery is capable of 95Kwh and the SOC indicates 100% at 90Kwh, that 5Kwh headroom simply exists.
