HVJB Designs and Patents

So the Mach-E HVJB design is, well you know, a work in progress. How are manufacturers like Slate able to design good high voltage junction boxes while not infringing on existing patents? Ford did not get it right the first go. Will new manufacturers design a good HVJB the first attempt or will it fail and need to be reworked or redesigned?

They don’t. HVBJB , by whatever name they are given, are issues. It takes awhile for the design to be optimized for the car configuration and HVB.

The HVJB was no doubt fine for the original cmax / focus electric replacement that the mach-e started out as. Then it went all mustangification and ford attempted to dress it in a sporty frock while getting away without changing the undergarments.

How do you know Slate has designed a good one when they don’t even have any drivable cars?

It wasn’t discovered as an issue until the MME was released for sale and people started putting miles on them. So presumably the engineers didn’t come across a failure during their preproduction testing.

FWIW, the Lightning has no such issues with the HVBJB. The Lightning has batteries made by SK On whereas the MME batteries are made by LG ES. So it could be a deficiency with LG’s design or Ford’s or both.

It’s basically a couple relays with temperature sensors. I doubt there’s much, if anything, under patent protection.

They under spec-ed the design. They’ll get it right next time. It needs to be much more robust and tech exists to provide them with what they require.
